GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. WYDOT now seeks a full-time Engineer II located in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position is responsible for but is not limited to, performing tasks for highway projects from inception through design, construction, and contract completion, under the direction of the Resident Engineer.

Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the history of the Old West.  The city offers nearby access to mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities.  Cheyenne also is home to the "Daddy of 'em All" - Cheyenne Frontier Days - held every last week of July.  Wyoming is one of seven states with no income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

 
  • Assist with the inspection and management of large, complex highway and bridge construction projects in the Cheyenne area.
  • Apply knowledge and experience in Civil Engineering and Surveying to solve problems and make critical project decisions.
  • Work as part of a team of construction professionals including engineers, surveyors, inspectors, and material testers.  
  • Monitor construction contract progress and costs.
  • Ensure projects are constructed to specification and comply with all Federal and State requirements.
  • Assist the Resident Engineer in the scoping and development of future highway and bridge projects.
  • Review project plans, specifications, and estimates and provide comments and feedback to designers.
  • Track and document project quantities for accurate and timely payment to contractors.
  • Prepare project correspondence, technical reports, and project related documents.
  • Act as WYDOT's representative on projects, working closely with contractor personnel, landowners, utilities, local government personnel, etc.
  • Collect and prepare survey data for design and construction of highway projects.
  • Train, coach, and mentor junior engineers and technicians.

Qualifications

**Must be able to obtain the following certifications/licenses:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt, and Concrete 
  • Asphalt Concrete, Soil & Aggregate 
  • WYDOT Portland Cement Concrete
     

KNOWLEDGE: 
 
 
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of surveying and engineering drawing and calculation
  • Knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices of highway engineering and roadway planning, construction, and design
  • Knowledge of computer software used in the design and calculation of project information
  • Skill in interpersonal relations
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Skills in critical thinking, complex problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making
  • Skills in surveying, materials testing, documentation, and computer operation
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, and other project documentation and ensure contractors adhere to these
  • documents throughout a project
  • Ability to determine personnel requirements to administer a project
  • Ability to know when to seek assistance with a problem from a higher authority
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (in Engineering)
 
Experience:
0-3 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Engineer I.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Engineer in Training (EIT) License or Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) Required.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Ability to sit/stand and operate equipment for long periods of time.
  • Work outdoors for extended periods of time in adverse environmental conditions.
  • Workaround heavy machinery.  
  • Potentially exposed to hazardous waste.
  • Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of inclement weather conditions including heat, cold snow, and rain.
  • Physical Ability: Bending, stooping, and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds; safely lifting and moving necessary materials from one point to another; ability to stand for long periods of time.

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver's license.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.

    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed, failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay.

    • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.

    • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.

    • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
