Technical Writer, Google Play

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 years of experience creating content for technical audiences (e.g., developer documentation, Computer Science course material, or IT administration playbooks).
  • 6 years of experience working with or writing for systems, or software engineering topics.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience researching and writing documentation for architects, developers, and IT operations.
  • Experience writing for the web and with Markdown, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of trends in user assistance, content publishing, and mobile technologies.
  • Ability to understand source code (e.g., Java).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and engaging priorities.
  • Ability to coach non-writers on ways to improve their writing skills.

About the job

Technical writers plan, create, and maintain educational content as an integral part of the engineering or user experience. The content is often in the form of documentation, but may also be UI text, sample code, videos, or other educational material. Regardless of the content medium, technical writers are distinguished by their abilities to explain complex topics in a way that’s useful to their audience.

Google Play is available on Android smartphones and tablets, as well as devices running Chrome OS, Wear OS, and Android TV. The team is building and operating a global store connecting users to amazing developer content. Trust, choice, and delight are core tenets of the teams strategy. In this role, you will be part of a team responsible for improving Google Play's top developer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Google Play Engineers and product teams to build developer-facing content for feature definition, integration guides, and to drive developer adoption of Google Play services.
  • Participate in gap analysis and customer research to help identify content needs. 
  • Understand the technical details or fundamental concepts of products or programs to anticipate user needs along the user journey.
  • Provide content management while legacy content is formatted into new ones.
