Position Title Security Officer
Department Campus Safety: Security Owings Mills
Position Summary
Provides security coverage for Stevenson University facilities, conducts foot patrols and security checks of University buildings, monitors areas for unauthorized persons and vehicles, responds to incidents, reports hazards, assists with special events and crowd control and completes necessary reports.
Education/Experience
High School graduate plus two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Police, firefighter, emergency medical technician (EMT), and security experience are preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability
Valid driver’s license and good driving record; must be insurable.

Skills in building security and lock procedures.

Skills in providing protection services.

Ability to write detailed and accurate reports.

Ability to detect criminal activity and assist Baltimore County Police Officers with investigations.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to use a computer for report writing.

Ability to understand and follow safety procedures and make logical decisions.

Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.

Ability to operate equipment safely including two-way radios.

Possess strong interpersonal skills which include courtesy, politeness.

Ability to successfully interact with different cultures and personalities in a professional and tactful manner.

Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

Ability to successfully complete First Aid, CPR, AED, and blood borne pathogen training.

Basic knowledge of hazardous materials.

Ability to work flexible schedule, holidays, weekends, day and night shifts and overtime.
Physical Requirements
Will be required to work in adverse weather conditions.

May be required to stand for long periods of time.

May be required to run certain distances in emergency situations.

May be required to subdue and detain individuals in emergency situations.

May be exposed to hazardous materials or chemicals.

Light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Climbing, crouching, standing, walking, lifting, talking, hearing.

Visual acuity is required to observe unauthorized or unlawful, unsafe or hazardous situations, behaviors of individuals, to describe physical descriptions of people, articles, or activities, to view suspicious activities, to perform routine security checks, to complete written reports and view computer terminals.

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; subject to occasional extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards.
Essential Functions
Patrols areas and reports suspicious activities.

Monitors security systems and facility for unauthorized persons.

Performs inspections and reports conditions that need to be repaired.

Completes Incident reports for any unattended items.

Completes reports and uses two-way radio to communicate with other members of the security staff.

Works with faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Provides information and directions when requested.

Protects and safeguards Stevenson University students and employees from criminal and potentially dangerous situations.

Protects University property from theft and vandalism.

Builds rapport with students and employees, with the objective of providing safety and security while on either the Greenspring or Owings Mills campus.

Issues parking citations for vehicles parked in violation of parking regulations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Assist with traffic patterns or flow on campus.

Work the Gate House and Monitor all vehicle traffic entering the Campus.

Checks all vehicles entering the campus for a valid Stevenson University hangtag.

Security officers are required to work in adverse weather conditions.

Logs name and driver’s license number of any unregistered visitor or student, along with vehicle information. Issues written warnings or tickets to students who do not have a current hang tag on their vehicles.

Writes required reports that coincide with warnings and tickets concerning student’s unregistered vehicles.

Perform foot patrols of all residential, academic, and multipurpose buildings on campus.

Monitor activities in and around building parking lots and courtyard areas.

Foot patrols may be conducted in adverse weather conditions.

Prepare incident reports for any damaged property, vandalism, suspicious activity, criminal activity, open or propped doors, unsecured hazardous materials, found property, or assistance given to Residence Life staff members.

Assists in prevention and detection of suspicious or criminal activity (e.g. thefts, larcenies, and malicious injury to property).

Routinely surveys campus locations to check for any safety, health or environmental hazards.

Completes operation reports and work orders for the repairs of University property.

Notifies management personnel of any unusual occurrence during their tour of duty.

Work special events and University functions where large crowds are in attendance.

Perform other duties as assigned.
