Special Information:
The successful applicant (s) will be based out of FWP Helena with travel throughout the state of Montana. There will be standing, lifting, twisting, and working in adverse weather. The job is scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. There will be a practical test for Welding/Mechanical.

Job Duties:
The fleet section procures, manages, maintains, and disposes agency owned vehicles. FWP fleet is a centralized program located in the Helena yet provides its services to all FWP employees and projects statewide. The fleet account is an internal service fund and charges rental rates to department users. The fleet accounting area tracks mileage, maintenance, and usage of the 600 fleet vehicles, monitors and reconciles WEX credit card transactions, processes journal entries for both vehicle rates and WEX transactions and maintains the fleet data base. The fleet maintenance area consists of automotive repair and maintenance, wood and metal fabrication and electronics design, installation, and repair. Fleet management monitors and coordinates all the above functions, develops strategies and direction to continually provide safe, efficient, cost-effective fleet services to all FWP personnel and programs.
Job Overview: Design, develop, engineer, fabricate, weld, and assemble metal projects such as animal traps, headache racks, hydraulic flat beds, specialized aircraft towbars, trailers, and fish carriers. Perform general preventive maintenance on department vehicles to include Fluid services, tire rotations, tune-ups, electrical diagnostics, and repair, perform technical repairs on engines, transmissions, clutches, and differentials as required.
Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities)These duties may vary depending on the fleet program needs and the agency's seasonal demands.
Fabrication
- Fabricate and assemble special request items such as animal traps, vehicle accessories and trailers to meet specialized Department needs.
- Design, engineer, and fabricate metal projects such as bear traps, vehicle headache racks, helicopter power towbar, live fish carriers, moving targets, trailers of all types, hydraulic dump beds and other requested items as needed.
- Develop layouts, diagrams and blueprints as specified by requestor. Layout and mark reference points using template, ruler, square, compass and scale. Operate machines such as shears, cutoff saws, band saw, brakes, press, form roll, drill press, arbor press, milling machine, metal lathe, Gas, Mig, Tig and Arc welding machines, CNC plasma table and hand plasma arc. Hammer, chip and grind work piece to cut, bend and straighten metal. Preheat workpieces using hand torch. Position, align, fit, and weld components within specific tolerances.
Vehicle Repair and Maintenance
- Inspect, maintain, and perform general preventive maintenance (lube and oil, tires, onboard electronics diagnostics, brakes, troubleshoot, replace/repair non-working parts, chassis, drivetrain, engine, emissions, minor body, and paint, perform safety inspections) on all types of department vehicles.
- Perform technical repairs on clutches, transmissions, differentials, front-end components, brakes, and other special requirements on department vehicles.
- Use computer diagnostic tools to perform diagnostic checks of vehicle's on-board computers to determine problem areas. Test electrical components using multi meters and test lights. Navigate reference data and troubleshooting information using online resources such as All Data and other providers.
- Provide supervisor/fleet manager with information to determine if a repair is economically feasible to extend the life of a vehicle.
- Perform maintenance and repairs of all types of department equipment to including but not limited to trailers, boats, forklifts, ATVs, snowmobiles, and enforcement equipment.
- Vehicle body damage repairs to include straightening bent or dented panels. Remove and replace damaged body parts. Preparation of metal and plastic body parts for refinish. Paint application using HVLP paint gun and associated tools and measuring equipment.
- Heavy equipment general repair and maintenance on department forklifts, skid steers, backhoe's, heavy trucks, and trailers.
Electronics Install & Maintenance
- Read wiring diagrams in order to perform electronic equipment installs in department vehicles. Equipment to be installed will be radios, sirens, emergency lighting, camera systems, winch and controls, antennas, automatic gun locks, amplifiers and boosters, other electronic equipment as needed.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose electronic issues by using multimeters, test light and other electronic test equipment. perform repairs of electronics wiring, coax, fuse panels and components. Verify equipment is functioning properly.
- Remove equipment from retiring vehicles and recondition for installation into new vehicle.
Small Engine Repair
Performs repair and maintenance on a variety of small engines, such as snowmobile engines, chain saws, ATVs, and lawn equipment. Observes and examines engine and parts in operation to detect malfunction. Tear down, repair or rebuild as needed if economically feasible.
Warehouse Complex
Perform building maintenance such as minor remodeling, electrical plumbing, snow removal and miscellaneous tasks as needed on campus. Ensure general maintenance is done to include updating wiring and repairs to existing structure.
Minimum Qualifications:
The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to two-year technical degree in automotive or welding and 2 years of experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case by-case basis.
