Basic Function

To provide assistance to nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians or other health care professionals by performing designated activities and duties relating to treatment and general health status which require specialized knowledge and skills; to take and process diagnostic radiographs; and to perform related duties as assigned.

The current vacancy is in the Mental Health department.  The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the department or County.

If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).

Examples of Work Performed

  1. Assist physician and/or nursing staff with medical examinations, minor surgery, bandaging and irrigations.
  2. Administer and/or distribute medications as directed by a physician or other qualified health care staff.
  3. Instruct patients on proper use of medications and other related information.
  4. Provide information concerning health care education, services and resources.
  5. Collect, prepare, and perform designated laboratory tests, such as, but not limited to, blood tests, urinalysis, and pregnancy tests as ordered.
  6. Perform routine health screening tasks, including but not limited to blood pressure, height, weight, vision, and hearing tests.
  7. Perform venipuncture, electrocardiograms, administer injections and assist with hematological functions.
  8. Take and process x-rays at health clinics as needed.
  9. Assist in mass screening, immunization programs, and community prevention efforts.
  10. Interview patients to obtain health histories and information on general health status.
  11. Assist in the maintenance and preparation of examination rooms and medical equipment.
  12. Prepare patients for examination(s) and/or laboratory test(s).
  13. Assist with clerical duties such as, but not limited to: filing, data entry, appointment scheduling, recording in patient's charts, handling phone calls, providing basic clinic information over the phone, and completing medical records and insurance forms.

(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification.  Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required.)

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  High school graduation or equivalent; plus graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredited Medical Assistant Program.

Experience:  None.

Substitution:  None.

Certifications/Licensure: (1) Must be a certified or registered Medical Assistant.  (2)Radiology Certification may be required depending on job assignment(3) A valid driver's license may be required depending on job assignment.

Exam/Screening Process Information

The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:
Training and Experience Rating = 100%

The examination for Medical Assistant will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating.  The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark “see resume” or “see work history” as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely.  Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.

Eligible List:  The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Medical Assistant . This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 1 month or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list.

Veteran's Preference:  This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process.  Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process.  Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
