Turbulence Modeling Postdoc

What You Will Do

We are looking for a postdoc to help advance the frontiers of the modeling of turbulent mixing. Los Alamos is engaged in wide-ranging research in the modeling of turbulence, including Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models, large-eddy simulation (LES), and hybrid modeling. Depending on the candidates skills and interests, the work could include probability density function (PDF) methods, stochastic differential equations, dynamical systems approaches to turbulence, and looking at the interaction of turbulence with other physics including combustion, radiation transport, and magneto-hydrodynamic or plasma turbulence. The successful candidate will participate in the theoretical development of new models, implementation in LANL multiphysics codes, and validating against experimental data. The project will include collaboration with our world class scientists in turbulent mixing in extreme conditions, LANL code teams, and DOE experimentalists working at our unique high-energy density experimental facilities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Turbulence Modeling

Research experience in the modeling, theory, or simulation of turbulence using RANS, LES, or hybrid methods.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

The individual should be have programming experience working in computation fluid dynamics codes. You will need to be familiar with at least one of: C++, Fortran, or Python.

Mathematics

Demonstrated proficiency in mathematical techniques in fluid dynamics.

Communication and Collaboration

Verbal and written communication skills are critical for this position. In addition to scientific publication and conference presentations, you will be expected to educate LANL staff about your research and work collaboratively to apply it to problems of LANL interest.

Continuous Learning

This position involves developing novel research tools and applying them in new ways. The successful candidate needs to demonstrate initiative for continuous learning and skill development as an approach to new challenges.

Education/Experience:

Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field, in the area of fluid dynamics, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:

Turbulence Model Development

Candidates with research experience in developing new predictive engineering models for turbulent flows are strongly preferred.

Variable Density Flows

It would be nice if you have experience with variable density flows, either multi-species mixing or highly compressible flows.

Mathematical Methods

Experience in any of the following would be a plus: reduced-order modeling, stochastic and PDF methods, or dynamical systems.

Turbulence Multiphysics

Research experience in the interaction between turbulence and other physics processes is a plus. This could include, combustion (including thermonuclear burn), radiation transport, magneto-hydrodynamics, and turbulent plasmas.

High-Performance Scientific Computing

Experience in scientific computing is a plus, especially any of the following: modern software engineering practices and tools, high-performance optimization including MPI and GPU programming, or being part of a code development team.

Clearance

It would be a plus if you are able to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.
