Manage a variety of projects in the field, building strong relationships with operations, crews, and customers while maintaining safe and on-budget jobs.
Position Overview/Impact
Directs, coordinates, and is responsible for the planning, organization, control, integration and completion of a milling and paving project. This employee will also manage changes and specs of the project. They may be responsible for more than one project at a time. This position will be creating continuity, driving performance, and communicating in a team environment to meet challenges.
Core Responsibilities
- Strictly adheres to and promotes environmental, health, safety and training policies, procedures and requirements, including but not limited to wearing proper PPE as required.
- Models professional and courteous attitude and behavior to all.
- Manage multiple construction crews.
- Project budget review and plans to improve cost/schedule with Operations & Performance Managers.
- Daily, 2 week and 90-day schedule development and communication.
- Attend local staff meetings to support operations effectively.
- Effectively delegates, schedules, and leverages time management skills.
- Material and truck scheduling/coordination.
- Track/manage daily quantities and costs.
- Payroll reviews.
- Schedule equipment moves and sub-contractors/traffic control.
- Maintains frequent and proactive communication with customer, project representatives, resident engineer, etc.
- Maintains successful project hand offs to set clear expectations detailing critical aspects of the project.
- Project and resource scheduling: 2-week/90-day schedule
- Material submittals/approvals tracking.
- Tracks material submittals, approvals, change orders for Estimating, and subcontractor payments.
- Subcontractor payment.
- Completes project close out for retainage payment.
- Change order tracking.
- Reviews weekly project progress and costs with Operations & Performance Managers.
- Manage multiple Superintendents.
- Ensure project deadlines are met.
- Cost control and revenue/cost projections/forecasts.
- Must be willing and available to work daytime hours, project-based evenings when assigned, and frequent weekend hours and weekend phone calls.
- Assists other departments as requested or assigned.
- Bid reviews.
- Daily troubleshooting.
- Communicating equipment needs.
- Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Required Experience/Education/Skills
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED), or 5+ years of experience in the construction industry along with supervisory experience.
- Exercise appropriate job decisions following standard policies and leveraging past precedents, prioritizing effectively.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and company procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as reports, company policies, and safety manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondences.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, staff, customers and the public.
- Intermediate ability to work in a team environment.
- Intermediate level of computer knowledge with strong data entry skills and be proficient in Outlook.
- Working knowledge of English and math, office practices and procedures.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and files.
- Ability to deal effectively with questions or problems, seeking assistance when needed, display expert level problem solving abilities and an eagerness to learn and grow.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks effectively with a focus on timeliness and responsiveness.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) with employees, management and clients.
- Be able to work independently, safely, have strong organization skills, and have a strong work ethic.
- Maintain cleanliness & neatness of all equipment, tools, desks, & computers at all times.
- Knowledge of DOT and CDL regulations.
- Intermediate knowledge of milling and paving.
- Expert ability to handle stressful situations as they arise.
- Employ high standard of ethics, integrity, and trust.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when required.
- Regular and timely attendance.
- Must possess a valid State driver’s license.
Preferred Experience/Education/Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Mining, Civil Engineering or a related engineering field, any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the preferred knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Experience in mining, construction or manufacturing environment preferred.
- General knowledge of milling and paving equipment.
- High level of proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint.
- Knowledge of material take offs.

This job will require both office work and field work. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is expected to work well with others. They will be frequently exposed to hot weather, cold weather, wet weather, dust, and moving mechanical equipment. They will occasionally be exposed to noise and high heat. The noise level in the office environment in the office is usually quiet.
