General Job Description
This is a casual position responsible for cooking and serving daily lunch, morning, and afternoon snacks on an as-needed basis. Responsible for following operational procedures for efficient and effective food production and distribution. Responsible for supporting the execution of the food service program and maintaining a safe and sanitary environment according to federal, state, local, university, and school school policies and laws. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Food Service Program Manager or a functional lead in the manager’s absence.
Essential Job Functions
  1. Prepares daily lunch and snacks for children following planned schedule.
  2. Prepares foods in accordance with cost effective menus that maintain nutritional integrity and are age and taste appropriate.
  3. Ensures food is prepared and served in a sanitary and safe environment.
  4. Cleans and maintains all food service equipment, kitchenware, distribution items, and kitchen facilities to meet specifications consistent with program needs.
  5. Receives and stores food.
  6. Maintains recipe files.
  7. Observes employee safety regulations in all phases of food service operations.
  8. Complies with waste management system for the food service program.
  9. Stays abreast of developments and emerging trends related to areas of specialization.
Non-Essential Job Functions
  1. May prepare and serve food for special meals.
  2. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university and departmental policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to the area of responsibility.
  3. Knowledge of sanitary and safety regulations governing the handling, preparation, serving, and storing of food.
  4. Knowledge of safety precautions and devices used in connection with kitchen equipment.
  5. Skill in the use of food service equipment.
  6. Ability to plan meals to avoid food waste.
  7. Ability to perform quantity conversions of recipes.
  8. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work effectively with other employees.
  9. Ability to obtain and maintain applicable certification.
  10. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
  11. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
Physical Demands
Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Required Experience and Training
No directly related experience is required. Texas Food Handler Certification is required at time of hire.

Specific Job Requirements/Duties for this Posting
This position is designed to support the food service program in the event of staff absence and/or peak periods. Applicants who apply to be in this pool may be contacted to complete employment paperwork prior to actual work. Shifts and hours may vary.

Benefit and Retirement Eligibility
This position is not eligible for participation in a retirement plan, subject to the position being less than 20 hours per week.
