Position Overview

Salary:  $17.7395/hour, salary reflects Step 4 of a 7-step pay scale. 


Work Schedule: 
  • Position #1 - Thursday through Monday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Position #2 - Thursday through Monday, 12:00 a.m. (midnight) - 8:30 a.m. (an additional $1.25/hour shift differential pay will be paid for this work schedule)

Job Summary: 

The Facilities Maintenance Support I performs routine cleaning and sanitation of assigned facilities and grounds.  Duties include cleaning floors, walls, windows, sidewalks, restrooms, work areas, break areas and public access areas of public buildings.  Duties include removal of waste materials and collection of recyclable materials.  Duties may include being observant of potential safety and security problems.   Additional duties include light mechanical repair.

Scope of Responsibility:

Incumbents follow a daily and weekly routine in performing duties and have limited supervision.  Work is repetitive and is typically scheduled.  Work may include directing the work of other Facilities Maintenance Support staff as part of a work crew. Makes non-routine choices within established precedent, considering objectives, under limited supervision, where the positive and negative impact affecting own work is readily isolated and managed. Performs simple troubleshooting and selects solutions from among proven alternatives. Failures and successes are readily isolated to immediate work areas and have limited financial impact.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs routine cleaning and sanitation duties

  • Uses vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, carpet cleaners, polishers, as well as hand cleaning supplies to maintain facilities
  • Safely uses cleaning chemicals, some of which may be caustic or may produce toxic gases if improperly mixed with one another
  • Removes waste material to dumpsters and recycling to proper collection locations
  • Removes snow from sidewalk areas and ensures that ice conditions are treated 
  • Waters plants inside buildings and in the immediate outdoor areas
  • Cleans break areas, offices, public and operational areas
  • Cleans and maintains supplies in restrooms

 

Performs a regular cleaning and janitorial materials inventory and notifies the supervisor when material stocks are low

  • May order department supplies in order to maintain a working inventory, preparing purchase orders for replenishment as directed by policy
  • Receives janitorial supplies and stores them in designated areas

 

Observes people or conditions that may present a threat to safety and security and reports them to the proper authorities.

  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Observes burnt out lights and either repairs them or reports them to maintenance staff for correction
  • Observes unattended packages left in the facility and calls for assistance if there is a possibility of a hazard
  • Monitors all building systems as directed and calls trained maintenance staff 

 

Performs additional facilities duties of a less routine nature

  • Paints walls in assigned areas
  • Replaces light bulbs or light switches, following basic safety practices for use of ladders and exposure to electricity
  • Moves office partitions and furnishings or assists others with moves
  • Assist with security measures and participate in Airport emergency plans. Perform security sweeps and report violations of airport security measures. Lock and secure building at night. Provide assistance during emergency events and training.
  • May replace air filters in HVAC equipment
  • May assist Building Maintenance Mechanics with routine maintenance, such as replacement of equipment
  • May set up tables and chairs for events and return them to their normal locations afterwards
  • May set up AV equipment and secure it following use

 

May provide routine responses to the public on basic questions such as directions 

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • The ability to answer basic questions in a courteous manner
  • A valid Montana driver’s license or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of employment
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and a Federal fingerprint based criminal history background check
  • Must be able to read, write, interpret written instructions and complete simple math

 

Preferred Qualifications/Skills

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Custodial experience

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work is mainly indoors with some exposure to outside areas.  Frequent moderate physical effort involving lifting of 5 - 25 pounds is required.   Intermittent (less than 15% of the time) lifting of amounts over 60 pounds may be required.  Work requires limited attention to detail or deadlines between 45% and 70% of the time.  Work includes frequent exposure to at least one disagreeable element, such as dirt, waste material or odors.  There may be intermittent exposure (less than 15% of the time) to intensely disagreeable elements.  In some department applications it may be necessary to drive intermittently.
