Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
This individual's work involves the application of technical knowledge in a medical filed for the purpose of examination and treatment of patients by the attending physician and for research.
An employee in this class selects equipment for use in ultrasound setups according to the patient, and instructs and assists patients in assuming physical position for required exposure to ultrasonic waves.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Performs ultrasound examinations, abdominal scans, retroperitoneal scans, obstetrics and gynecology scans, radiation therapy localization for treatment planning, and other anatomical areas as required, and minor surgical procedures.
Schedules cases to coordinate with other patient examinations; positions and transfers patients; lifts move and transport patients.
Selects proper technical factors on an individual [patient basis; selects and operates equipment as directed, develops film by automatic processing. Assists physician in administering medicines.
Maintains records of examination data and other pertinent information on patients. Consults with others to obtain a complete clinical history and gathers pertinent clinical data.
Secures and returns supplies as well as patient folders in order to insure proper maintenance.
Performs other duties as directed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High school or equivalent plus completion of a full time training course for ultrasound technicians as approved by the American Medical Association and two years’ experience under the direction and supervision of a radiologist or other medical officer.
Professionally registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Knowledge of equipment used in ultrasounds setups.
Knowledge procedures used in performing ultra sound exams.
Knowledge of the anatomy and anatomical relationships and cross sectional anatomy in all body plans.
About to operate ultrasound diagnostic equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written directions.
Ability to relate with tact and understand to deal with parents, doctors, staff and all other persons contacted during the course of work.
Ability to employ sound judgment in the planning and execution of assigned duties.
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that apply to the practice of in an inpatient care setting.
Knowledge of hospital/departmental policies and procedures, emergency protocols, Joint Commission, Center for Medicare and Medicaid services and all other local and federal regulatory standards
Ability to make presentations before management, public groups, and staff.
Knowledge of analytical and grammatical skills necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Familiarity with spreadsheet and overall computer skills.
Ability to work with a wide variety of other professionals and staff engaged in the delivery of health care services.
Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the public to be served.
Ability to work well independently including without administrative support when required.
Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills are essential.
Ability to work in a highly visible position undergoing significant changes with multiple constituents, each with demands exceeding resources.
Ability to work independently, as part of a team and be available.
Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to display time management skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work in a climate-controlled and well-lighted environment with a smoke-free policy. Employee will work in an office and throughout the building daily. Has Category 1 risk of exposure to infectious diseases, but receives training in hand hygiene practices, Universal Precautions and has access to personal protective equipment if direct exposure is anticipated; is subject to interruptions and noise daily.

Good general health and stress coping ability. Full mobility and ability to participate in vigorous activity. Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with all constituents (patients, families, peers, and other healthcare team members) as needed for assessment, intervention, and professional development. Possess near vision acuity for accurate reading of equipment and recording on patient charts. Must be physically able to lift, support, and move patients.
