NYULH Landscape
The mission of NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center (PCC) is to combine visionary thinking and compassionate care with the science of treating cancer. Designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center, the highest designation awarded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Perlmutter Cancer Center is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top 25 cancer centers in the nation. The PCC is located in the heart of NYC and serves a diverse subset of patients.
The goal of the Center for Blood Cancers (CBC) is to foster collaboration between all PCC sites, bridge the gap between basic and clinical science, develop a biobank to support research throughout the PCC, and provide equitable top-level care to all patients, regardless of location. Additionally, CBC includes a FACT-accredited BMT program performing autologous transplants, allogeneic transplants, as well as cellular therapy.
Resources in place
PCC serves a large, diverse patient population across the NYULH network with an integrated EMR. Our clinical team consists of specialists in leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma, and BMT, who strive to provide quality care to all our patients. Every year we implement new quality metrics to ensure our patients are receiving top care. For example: ensuring all AML and ALL patients over 60 have a supportive oncology consult and patients with a complex heme diagnosis receive a diagnosis consult with a specialist to ensure the proposed treatment regimen is clinically appropriate.
We have a skilled clinical trials team with a nationally recognized team of investigators, who have opened first-line, second-line, and third-line studies in all hematology disease areas, and accrue around 100 patients per year to clinical trials.
The CBC has also developed an extensive biobank, to house bone marrow, blood samples, lymph nodes, and cerebrospinal fluid for retrospective research on blood cancers. The biobank currently houses samples from Manhattan but is in the process of expanding to Long Island.
One of our overarching goals is to develop a bench-to-bedside-to-bench work environment, where there is a continuous feedback loop of basic science-feeding clinical practice, and vice versa. Our clinical and basic researchers are eager to collaborate, and our program supports this collaboration through monthly clinical and basic science research talks. We also help fund research through support from the National Institute of Health (NIH), Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), as well as CBC-funded pilot projects that support translational research.
At present, we have strong basic and translation research in acute leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma, microbiome, epigenetics, and cellular therapy. Some particular areas of focus are Whole Genome Sequencing and further development of our CAR-T program.

What are we looking for?
Foster collaboration with network sites, while also catering to each site’s unique patient population.
Lead the basic science and translational research efforts for the Hematologic Malignancies Program at PCC.
Develop a basic science and translational research program in concert with the clinical leadership of programs in leukemia, myeloma, and lymphoma to promote collaborations and novel clinical therapies at PCC
Collaborate with clinical and translational colleagues in lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma to develop programs in each disease area that have a basic science, translational, and clinical component.
Collaborate with present NYU and PCC investigators to enhance the national profile of Hematologic malignancy research
Open clinical trials appropriate for patients throughout the network
Develop correlative studies with ongoing PCC clinical research
Recruit additional faculty members to conduct basic/translational research in hematologic malignancies.
Develop a SPORE/P01 or equivalent grant in one or more areas of Hematologic malignancy research
Mentor junior faculty to develop IITs, including IITs based on PCC science.
Continue to foster a strong teaching base for the fellowship program
