DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey level class within the professional Engineer series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Project Coordinator (formerly Assistant Civil Engineer) by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including participating in engineering projects of greater breadth and complexity. Incumbents within this classification are also required to possess professional engineering registration. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior Civil Engineer in that the latter exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level technical engineering staff. Advancement to the "Senior" level is based on proficiency in assigned duties and responsibilities, and is at the discretion of higher level supervisory or management staff.
