GENERAL DESCRIPTION:   


Bring your knowledge, skills, and career plans with you and become a part of the nearly 50-year-old Forestry Conservation Program (FCP) of the Office of State Lands and Investments, Wyoming State Forestry Division. The program is co-located with the Wyoming Department of Corrections - Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp.
 
The Supervisory Forestry Technician (Crew Supervisor) position provides supervision, direction, and guidance, and maintains inmate crews' workflow on work projects. You'll train and serve as a working supervisor to inmate crews on Forestry Conservation Program assigned projects. Typical duties include maintaining accountability, transporting, delegating, monitoring, and evaluating inmate work crews on daily work projects and fire suppression activities. Work projects may include thinning timber stands, fuel reduction and mitigation, trail construction, natural resource-based community service, and other disaster relief and/or prevention. You will also assist with the instruction of inmates in the classroom to National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards. You will train inmates on the job in the safe use of chainsaws, felling, hand and power tools, and fire suppression. Individuals in these positions work in accordance with specific policies, procedures, and rules.
 
Newcastle is located at 4,334 feet above sea level, with summer high temperatures of around 84 degrees and lows of around 58 degrees, and winter highs of 35 degrees and lows of 13 degrees. Newcastle is the county seat of Weston County, Wyoming, and is at the intersection of U.S. Route 16 and U.S. Route 85. The population was recorded as 3,374 in the 2020 census. The town boasts great walking trails. Public Education in the City of Newcastle is provided by Weston County School District #1.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
 

  • Independently manages and supervises a crew of up to 10 inmates in field-based forestry, community, and fire suppression projects. 
  • Maintains accountability and security of inmate crew, and ensures all policies and procedures are upheld.
  • Maintains production, efficiency, and workflow of inmate crew. 
  • Performs as a working supervisor; instructing, coaching, and working alongside the crew.
  • Perform arduous physical activity for extended periods and maintain the required NWCG 310-1 physical fitness certification.
  • Maintains records on work accomplished, vehicle use, timesheets, and inmate evaluations and observations; writes and submits inmate incident and disciplinary reports.
  • Operates and maintains forestry equipment and vehicles; operates equipment such as chainsaws, wood splitters, chippers, and heavy equipment to complete projects.  
  • Instruct courses relating to wildland firefighting, safety, maintenance, and operation of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Performs as a Squad Boss (FFT1) and Intermediate Faller (FAL2) on the FCP Type 2 Wildland Fire Handcrew.
  • May operates larger capacity trucks, such as Type 6 wildland fire engines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Forestry)
 
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Forestry)
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Must possess and maintain national certification in accordance with NWCG standards, PMS 310-1, within one (1) year of the date of hire
Must complete WDOC Pre-Service Academy Training within one (1) year of the date of hire
Must complete annual In-Service Training

OR
 
Education & Experience Substitution:
3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Forestry)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Must possess and maintain national certification in accordance with NWCG standards, PMS 310-1, within one (1) year of the date of hire
Must complete WDOC Pre-Service Academy Training within one (1) year of the date of hire
Must complete annual In-Service Training
 

Necessary Special Requirements


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Perform arduous physical activity for extended periods and maintain the required wildland fire NWCG 310-1 Arduous physical fitness certification (work capacity test) annually.
  • Work activities are inside and outside, under heat and cold and wet inclement weather conditions, and in dusty and smoky environments. 
  • May travel up to 25%. 
  • May be required to stand for long periods on concrete, asphalt, and other hard surfaces. 
  • Ability to successfully complete a Self-Defense Tactics course provided by the Wyoming Department of Corrections.
