The Opportunity

The Head of Investment Accounting Governance is a key role in the delivery of MassMutual’s investment strategy and in this, MassMutual’s purpose: to provide financial well-being to all Americans. We are seeking a results-oriented and highly collaborative professional with the ability to create and lead a team within the Investment Controllership team. This position will the lead the team that is responsible for designing and executing the processes supporting the integrity of the accounting data information from the Company’s securities system.

This is an opportunity for an individual who thrives in a highly dynamic and agile accounting environment to collaborate across teams focused on solid execution and improving outcomes.  We are seeking an accounting professional who wants to join a highly motivated team of professionals focused on proactively driving the development and execution of process improvements, meaningful analysis and improved coordination with the business partners for Investment activities.

The Team

This newly created team is responsible for the ensuring the integrity of the accounting information received from the Investment Operations securities system.  This team will be highly focused on the control environment supporting this purpose.  To this end, the team will work closely with its critical partner, Investment Operations.  The team will look to leverage technology and resource opportunities to ensure and efficient and effective approach to maintaining these processes. Head of Investment Accounting Systems Governance will lead and inspire the team to continue progressing the operations model and function.

The Impact:

Reporting to MassMutual’s Head of Investment Controllership, Head of Investment Accounting Governance will be a member of the Investment Controllership leadership team and a key partner and representative to the operational accounting impacts of the investment operations processes.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly complex general investment account portfolio with diverse asset classes and strategies, this role will build a framework and lead a vision that provides for the effective controls of operational securities accounting.

  • Stand up and lead the team responsible for ensuring effective controls related to the securities operational accounting, including execution of daily and monthly reconciliations, analysis of data exceptions, and support of system upgrades
  • Implementation of new control processes and assess improvements by evaluating the end to end impacts to operational securities accounting
  • Partner with teams, including but not limited to Securities Controllership. Investment Operations, Treasury, and ERM
  • Establish workflows and operational securities accounting

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of work experience with a track record of increasing responsibility
  • Significant knowledge and experience of U.S. GAAP
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or related discipline
  • CPA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience of investments is preferred
  • Strong analytical skills: ability to analyze financial data sets and tell the story of the data
  • Proven ability to complete high quality work efficiently and increase autonomy over time
  • Experience in creating and developing teams
  • Experience effectively leveraging outsourcing and offshoring arrangements
  • Able to build and maintain strong working relationships across cross-functional groups
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to express ideas in and articulate in an organized and persuasive manner to leadership, staff, regulatory bodies, etc.
  • Intellectual curiosity to continue learning and adding breadth and depth to understanding
