JOB DESCRIPTION

Director Trauma Nursing is responsible for planning, directing, and monitoring of the clinical services and operations of the trauma centers of Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH). Oversees and coordinates activities for one or more BSWH designated trauma centers and ensures the specific designation requirements are met, which may include regulatory compliance, trauma center registry and verification, injury prevention, improvement initiatives, trauma clinical training, and trauma center promotion and communications. Establishes and implements trauma center policies. procedures, and practices in coordination with other BSWH hospitals, departments, and facilities. Reviews and evaluates patient condition reports to ensure documentation and compliance requirements are met. Collaborates with operations, medical, and nursing leadership in developing specific services for trauma patient care. Maintains relationship and active involvement with the Texas Department of Health and the American College of Surgeons Committee on verification criteria and regulatory compliance for BSWH trauma center designations. Develops, introduces, and implements approved standards and guidelines for trauma care programs in alignment with BSWH trauma system goals and objectives.

Recommends policies and organizational changes for area. Plans and executes projects and initiatives that meet annual objectives. Plans and directs the operations of a department or area, with responsibility for staffing, processes, budgets, and costs of the unit. Leads and advises subordinate(s) to meet schedules, resolve technical problems, and monitor performance. Has a larger, more complex organization or functional area than a manager. Often has one or more managers or supervisors reporting to the role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

1.    Directs clinical trauma services for assigned area of responsibility for BSWH.

2.    Recommends and implements strategic and operational plans and priorities for trauma care aligned to BSWH business objectives.

3.    Collaborates with senior leadership, medical staff, nursing staff to coordinate and deliver trauma care services and initiatives in a BSWH trauma center, trauma programs, or assigned area of responsibility.
 
4.    Evaluates and monitors care provided to trauma patients and leads trauma center quality and performance improvement activities.

5.    Develops and maintains required clinical, administrative, performance improvement, patient safety, and statistical analysis reporting in accordance with the Texas Department of State Health Services EMS Trauma System requirements and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Center criteria which includes maintenance of the registry and trauma center verification.

6.    Identifies possible ACS criterion deficiencies and communicates obstacles to corrective action to appropriate senior leadership.

7.    Develops and implements policies, procedures, processes, and systems to deliver trauma care for assigned area.

8.    Develops and conducts an annual needs assessment for all trauma programs and trauma related activities associated with trauma service delivery.

9.    Ensures compliance with accepted standards, protocols, and patient management guidelines regarding trauma care and identifies, evaluates, and implements methods for resolution of issues.

10.    Leads the selection and coordination of trauma education for the trauma center or assigned trauma service.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

1.    Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field. Master's degree preferred.

2.    3+ years of nursing experience in trauma center, surgical critical care, or related area.

3.    Experience in a leadership role preferred.

4.    Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Texas.

5.    Experience collaborating across multiple departments and clinical disciplines within a large, complex healthcare organization preferred.

6.    Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

7.    Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.

8.    Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.

9.    Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) or Advanced Trauma Course Nurse (ATCN) required.

10.    Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required

Qualifications

  • Degree: A Bachelor's degree is required
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Certifications Required: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and (BLS) Basic Life Support Certification
  • Registered Nurse License
  • Must have a current ATCN or current TNCC certification.
  • Must have either a current PALS or current ENPC certification.
