The Opportunity

In Abbott’s Heart Failure (HF) division, we’re advancing the treatment of heart and vascular disease through breakthrough medical technologies.  As a global leader in Mechanical Circulatory and Cardiac Pressure Measurement Systems, our breakthrough medical device technologies help restore people's health so they can get back to living their best lives, faster. We focus on innovative technologies that can improve the way doctors treat people with heart failure (HF).  As a Principal Software Architect in the Heart Failure Division, you will be responsible for the architectural vision, strategy, and execution of our medical IoT platform, which comprises Class II and Class III medical devices, as well as web and mobile applications. You will lead the design of large-scale, cloud-native software solutions, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and secure. This role requires hands-on experience in programming and diagnosing system-level issues, along with a deep understanding of enterprise software development. This is an excellent opportunity to step into a high-impact, high-visibility role that will enhance and optimize our existing cloud platform while developing and integrating novel features currently under development. You will join a high-performing R&D team that espouses a can-do and winning mindset! 

What You’ll Work On

  • Lead the architectural design and development of our medical IoT platform, ensuring seamless integration of IoT devices, mobile applications, and web platforms. 

  • Ensure the platform is scalable, secure, and robust. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to define technical requirements, gather feedback, and ensure the architecture meets user needs and business goals. 

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, including coding, monitoring, and system diagnostics. 

  • Mentor and guide engineering teams on best practices and technical standards. 

  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and tools to enhance the platform. 

  • Oversee system integration, ensuring optimal performance and resolving architectural bottlenecks. 

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations, particularly in healthcare. 

  • Implement robust security measures in collaboration with Cyber Security experts. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in software development.

  • Proven experience as a Chief Architect or similar role in enterprise cloud-native software development. 

  • Experience with frameworks such as Spring Boot, Django, Flask, ASP.NET Core, Node.js, React, Angular, Vue.js, Express.js, Kubernetes, Terraform, and Serverless Framework. 

  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Swift, Kotlin, and SQL/NoSQL. 

  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). 

  • Deep understanding of various architectural patterns, including microservices, event-driven, and serverless, as well as containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and DevOps practices. 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to diagnose system-level issues. 

  • Strong leadership and communication skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 plus years of experience in software development

  • Experience in the medical device industry or other highly regulated environments is preferred.

The base pay for this position is $146,700.00 – $293,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
