Principal Engineer, Query Processing, Spanner, Google Cloud

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in software engineering.
  • Experience building a query processing engine for SQL relational database management systems (RDBMS).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience building transaction processing systems (OLTP) and/or larger scale analytics (OLAP)
  • Experience with high availability designs, parallel/horizontal scale-out databases architectures.
  • Experience motivating others to act by creating a shared sense of outlook and purpose, creating a compelling roadmap for the future through clear communication and a collaborative leadership approach.
  • Ability to promote product excellence and collaboration, driving a portfolio of concurrent engineering projects, from short-term critical feature launches to long-term research initiatives.
  • Ability to think in a strategic manner to develop innovative product solutions, with a global mindset to effectively work across regional boundaries.

About the job

As Principal Engineer for Query Processing in Spanner, you will be responsible for a broad range of functions from language dialect and feature surface (e.g.,GoogleSQL, industry compatibility dialects), query optimization, query execution with batch processing, and low-level read API and full-text search. You will bring an experienced database product sensibility to help align our internal development with Google Cloud ecosystem compatibility aspirations.

As the Principal Engineer, you will lead the technical long-term strategy for our team and work closely with our engineers to see it through, while setting high technical excellence in everything we do. You will also be responsible for mentoring, guiding, and growing the Query Processing team.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $278,000-$399,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Oversee and steer all the query engineering projects in multiple locations and drive cross-functional engineering decisions across Spanner sites to deliver a exceptional query processing engine in Spanner.
  • Provide domain expertise and engineering insight to guide early designs, accelerate project decision making, and maintain close oversight of technical execution and proactively adjust course where necessary.
  • Drive the innovation and execution needed in the query system to enable customers to meet their business goals. Rethink and rearchitect several aspects of how the query engine interfaces with the rest of Spanner.
  • Partner with engineering and product management teams to drive product direction.
  • Mentor and grow Technical Leads and Software Engineers in the Query Processing team.
