Position Overview

Salary Range: 

  • Maintenance Worker - $21.4891 - $24.8624/hour
  • Equipment Operator - $23.4957 - $27.2012/hour
  • Salaries reflect Step 3 and Step 6 of a 7-step pay scale
  • Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training
Work Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Friday & Saturday - 5:00 a.m. -  3:30 p.m.


Job Summary: 

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and equipment operation duties involved in the maintenance and construction of public works, parks, or public utilities facilities, structures, and systems.   

 

Scope of Responsibility:

Maintenance Worker:  Incumbent performs most of the maintenance duties required of the Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker, but is not expected to function at the same skill level, operates less equipment, and usually exercises less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.   Incumbent is usually supervised while working and work fits an established structure or pattern.  

 

Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker:   Incumbent performs full range of duties as assigned, operates full range of small and medium heavy equipment, works independently and exercises judgment and initiative.  Incumbent receives only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the division.  Under typical circumstances, incumbent has advanced from the Maintenance Worker position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Department Operations

  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment; check tires, oil, lubricant, and water levels, lights, and fuel; wash, lubricate, and adjust equipment; change tires.
  • Maintain shop and storage areas used in performing assigned tasks; maintain cleanliness of work area and tools.         
  • Maintain a variety of records; complete activity records and reports.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Load and haul equipment.
  • May serve as a lead worker when assigned under current City contract.
  • Perform a variety of duties involved in solid waste collection and disposal; load and operate sanitation trucks; remove debris and trash from streets and alleys. 
  • Operate automated and other refuse packers including front end loaders, rear loaders, side loaders, roll off trucks, brush trucks, and pressure washers.
  • Move, level, and cover refuse at landfill; maintain landfill roads.
  • Perform a variety of general labor duties at the landfill; remove debris and trash from roadway, adjacent properties, and landfill site.
  • Assist landfill attendant as assigned.

 

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Skills/Qualifications for Maintenance Worker:

  • Two (2) years of related work experience performing field maintenance and equipment operation duties
  • Possession of a State of Montana Class B Type 2 commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment

 

Required Skills/Qualifications for Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker:

  • Three (3) years of related work experience performing field maintenance and equipment operation duties
  • Possession of a State of Montana Class B Type 2 commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement

 

Preferred Skills/Qualifications for Maintenance Worker and Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of solid waste collection vehicle operation and landfill activities

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work is primarily outside in the elements.  Working conditions require heavy physical effort moving over 75 pounds, where effort is intermittent and less than 15% of the time.   Working conditions require moderate attention to detail or deadlines frequently (between 45% and 70% of the time).   A typical workday involves exposure to disagreeable elements, at least one of which is intense, on an occasional basis (between 15% and 45% of time).   Frequent driving is required.
