Social Workers assigned to EMCU will be primarily responsible for Sexual abuse and severe Physical abuse cases, also eligible to take all cases in need of investigation/assessment by the Kansas Protection and Report Center. Prior to working any SEA cases, they will attend a weeklong training (Child First) to learn how to do forensic interviews. They will also attend another weeklong training (SANESART) which is an overview of anatomy and the medical examination that victims go through for evidence collections. The Sexual abuse and severe PHA cases are teamed with a Detective from within EMCU or other Law enforcement agencies where the incident occurred. This position requires collaboration with many entities to include the District attorney’s office, CAC staff, law enforcement, Wesley and Via Christi child abuse expert physicians and forensic nursing staff The CPS assigned to EMCU are also responsible for testifying in criminal court on Preliminary hearings and trials when their cases go to hearing. EMCU Staff participate in Multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings which occur weekly. There is a rotation for a non-involved Social Worker to attend each week. They also attend Peer Review once every month to critique interviews to improve everyone’s interviewing skills. Social Workers are also responsible for providing stats to CAC staff on almost every case they work.
