Occupational Therapist Position Description
POSITION OVERVIEW

Under general supervision, occupational therapists provide occupational therapy services in various settings, conducts evaluations of students referred for services, serves as a member of multidisciplinary team(s), and provides other related services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Fosters an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of assigned students.
Conduct appropriate evaluation of students referred for possible exceptional educational needs and prepare written reports of the evaluations and findings.
Provide physical therapy services, including direct, monitor, and consultation services in various settings throughout the school environment.
Implement treatment program to achieve established goals and perform periodic re-evaluation to determine effectiveness of therapy program.
Participate in development of IEPs for students with exceptional educational needs.
Maintain written records/documentation according to state and federal guidelines; prepare progress reports; collect necessary data; complete documentation for Medicaid billing.
Collaborate with other school personnel regarding physical therapy and students' needs.
Provide consultative and advisory services to family, educational staff, and involved health care agencies as appropriate.
Lift, transfer, and position students and equipment as necessary in the provision of services and consultation.
Maintain necessary certification, licensure, and registration; participate in continuing education to insure continued professional competence.
Travel to and between schools to provide services.
Effectively maintain and communicate student progress using formative and summative assessments based on current state standards in accordance with district reporting timelines.
Maintain consistent data on student performance, activities, and progress related to the services on the IEP.
Timely completion of required state, federal, and district reports, including IEPs, progress reports, etc.
Communicate regularly to parents in written and/or conference format.
Uphold and assist in enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Requires the use of multiple communication and technology systems, which may include electronic mail, computers, document cameras, smart boards, and web-based resources.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Serves on staff committees as required.

- Performs related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: A variety of disabilities, including Asperger's Syndrome, autism, pervasive developmental disorder, cerebral palsy, attention deficit, developmental delay, muscular dystrophy, dyspraxia, learning disabilities, and sensory processing disorders; rules and procedures for student safety.
Skills in: Pediatric screening, assessment, treatment, and documentation with students ages 3-21; proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communications; managing time, establishing schedules, and work independently; effective communication with parents or guardians in a diverse community.
Ability to: Support students in a positive and confident manner; be fair and consistent when working with a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population; adapt to change and remain flexible; organize activities; manage student behavior; use good judgment to maintain a safe learning environment; provide instruction and demonstrate techniques; use necessary equipment, computers, machinery, tools, or software; direct the work of paraeducators; establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with students, parents or guardians, staff and administrators; in some positions, administer first aid and CPR.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Required to support a wide range of student achievement and behavior; required to remain flexible to meet students’ immediate needs; required to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize; may experience frequent interruptions; may occasionally work with distraught or difficult students; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; in some positions the necessary and appropriate instructional methods may require specific positions and movements, and sufficient stamina and exertions, to demonstrate techniques properly for student safety, or to conduct or direct students; in some positions precautions may need to be taken to prevent or lessen exposure of self and/or students to various materials, fumes, equipment, cutting edges or hot surfaces.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in occupational therapy; academic preparation for or experience in supporting a culturally, racially and economically diverse student population.
Certificates & Licenses: Valid Washington state occupational therapy license; valid Washington state ESA certificate with appropriate endorsement for assignment; some positions may require valid first aid and CPR certification; some positions may require a valid Washington state driver's license and/or a Class II driver's license.
Clearances: Criminal justice fingerprint and background check.
