The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DEFINITION: 

Maintains and repairs various types of equipment and tools.


Essential Job Functions

Maintains and repairs equipment and tools used in:
 
Recreational activities: beach, pool, and lifeguard equipment such as resuscitators, oxygen tanks, boats and boat engines, rescue devices and lifelines; play equipment such as merry-go-rounds, swings, slides and equipment used in sports and special events.
 
Parks and Public Works maintenance: power mowers, small tractors and attachments, small utility vehicles, fertilizer spreaders, power tillers, air compressors, spray unit pumps, sprinkler heads, chain saws, edgers, welding machines, nail guns, forklifts, scissor lifts, generators, and various other types of gas and electric power equipment.
 
Engineering and surveying: survey equipment such as clinometers, tapes, tripods, and related survey accessories; construction materials and laboratory testing equipment; and blue-print machines and drafting arms.
 
Hospitals and institutions: autoclaves, laboratory equipment, orthopedic devices, operating tables, oxygen regulators, respirators, beds and rolling equipment; kitchen equipment such as ice machines, slicers, mixers and choppers; water distribution and sewage disposal equipment; low pressure boilers, heating and ventilating systems, pumps, compressors, etc.; floor care equipment such as buffers, auto scrubbers, etc.; and steamers, restroom cleaners, sweepers, trams, and pressure washers.
 
Fueling facilities: dispensers, pumps, turbines, nozzles (with and without vapor recovery), hoses (single walled and co-axial with vapor recovery), hose retractors, fuel filter and the mechanical aspects of tank and sump sensor probes, spill buckets and dispense pans.
 
Custody Facilities: hydraulic vehicle gates, mechanical and electronically operated inmate cells and/or dormitory sliders, doors, and gates.
 
Institutional Kitchens (food preparation and food distribution facilities): ovens, dishwashers, steam kettles, mixers, cook and chill, food delivery carts, food warmers, refrigerators, freezers, pallet jacks, and other production equipment found in institutional kitchens.
 
Miscellaneous activities: voting booths, ballot boxes and other election paraphernalia; cabinets, partitions, furniture and office equipment.
 
Calibrates fuel quantity gauges to measure fuel delivery.
 
Sets readings on computerized fuel monitoring systems such as Veeder-Root and Auto-Stik.
 
Operates powered wood and metal working equipment such as lathes, mills, drills, and saws. 
 
Sharpens saws and other tools.
 
Loads, unloads, picks up and delivers equipment and supplies.
 
Keeps work records on repairs, repair orders, and other work-related information. May prepare and generate reports.
 
Ensures stock and work areas are clean and orderly.
 
Exercises utmost care in the performance of duties and uses protective clothing, respirators, or other safety devices whenever necessary.
 
Inventory and issue small tools and power tools from tool crib as assigned
 
Perform minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, kitchen maintenance, or other work in the building trades and general maintenance field as assigned.
 
Brazing, soldering, tack or spot welding as assigned
 
Acts as a lead worker as required.
 
Drives automotive equipment and operate equipment including light trucks, power jacks, and forklifts in the performance of duties as assigned.
 
Replenish supplies, coolant, fuel, and other fluids required for efficient operation of equipment as assigned
 
Oil and grease non-automotive equipment in absence of a helper as assigned
 
Operate equipment during relief periods as assigned.
 
Perform product examination and analysis of equipment malfunctions or mechanical failure due to various causes as assigned. Contacts vendor to report machine malfunction as necessary.
 
Perform minor adjustments to large capacity mail machine components to maintain workflow and accurate metering of mail and prevent/fix paper jams as assigned. Use large capacity mail machine for mass mailings as necessary.
 
Occasionally works in confined spaces or in an environment with hazardous materials as assigned. 
 

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment and tools*.


*Relevant equipment and tools include, but are not limited to, hydraulic lifts, drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, various power tools, band saws, and blow torches.  


LICENSE: 

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. 


PHYSICAL CLASS – MODERATE III AND ARDUOUS IV:  

Physical class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. 


Physical Class IV – Arduous: Required for assignments that require lifting of objects over 25 pounds in the maintenance and repair of equipment and tools.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Some Assignments in this class require the use of respirators such as when working in confined spaces or in an environment with hazardous materials.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Additional points will be awarded for additional experience beyond the Minimum Requirements.

EXAMINATION CONTENT: 

This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience based upon application information and desirable qualifications weighted 100%. 


The passing score for the assessment – OR – assessment part is 70%.  


ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

Candidates who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur.
