Abbott Diabetes Care has opened  a new site, in Kilkenny, that is  at the forefront of Diabetes care with the latest technology, to manufacture FreeStyle blood glucose test strips and FreeStyle Sensors for use in diabetes management. Among Abbott Diabetes Care leading brands are the FreeStyle Precision, FreeStyle Lite and FreeStyle Libre systems.

As a Senior Packaging Engineer you will introduce packaging components to our manufacturing lines within a Third Party Manufacturing facility. This role will involve leading the design, planning, and implementation of packaging components for both existing and new products while providing technical leadership and mentorship to engineers and team members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Select alternative pack component suppliers to ensure a reliable supply of all packaging materials to third-party manufacturers (TPMs).

  • Collaborate with Packaging Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to install and validate packaging equipment at TPMs.

  • Identify and implement process improvement projects related to packaging and labeling.

  • Design, develop, and test diverse packaging components (e.g., cartons, inserts, labels, shipper cases) that ensure product protection and handling.

  • Work closely with suppliers to resolve material and quality issues, implementing Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) and Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCAR).

  • Establish packaging specifications based on product nature, cost constraints, legal requirements, and necessary protection against external variables.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design package exteriors, considering product identification, sales appeal, and production techniques.

  • Manage documentation and maintain compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

  • Create and manage change requests and action plans in the document control system as needed.

  • Supervise or guide other engineers and technicians, and participate in cross-functional project teams.

  • Support company initiatives related to Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and regulatory compliance.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive technical experience and demonstrated competence, with a strong understanding of regulations and standards affecting division products.

  • Knowledge of FDA, GMP, ASTM standards, and ISO 13485 guidelines.

  • Experience with equipment process validation principles and engineering documentation practices.

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.

  • Experience in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Ability to travel occasionally to support supplier project meetings.
