Instructional Lab Tech, Senior

The Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking a candidate for their Senior

Instructional Laboratory Technician position in the Environmental Engineering Program at the University of Southern California in the Viterbi School of Engineering. The Senior Lab Technician supports critical operations, reporting directly to the Department Chair and the faculty teaching the laboratory sessions. This position establishes and operates standard laboratory equipment and prepares experimental materials using laboratory protocols and safety guidelines.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

•Assist with teaching CE363L: Environmental Chemistry and Analysis and CE410L: Introduction to Environmental Engineering Microbiology laboratory sessions.

•Help with the teaching laboratories, including preparing the laboratory for each teaching lab session and training the teaching assistant in experimental procedures and lab equipment utilization. 

•Effectively use and operate the lab equipment and analytical instruments, performing necessary maintenance and calibration, ordering materials and supplies, and fixing equipment as required.

•Fabricate water, air, or soil test samples for the teaching laboratories based on departmental and instructor needs.

•Dispose of laboratory waste following EH&S guidelines.

•Operate heavy machinery and maintain laboratory equipment.

•Clean and organize the laboratory to maintain a safe and orderly work environment.

•Assist with inventory tracking in the department.

•Train and assist other laboratory staff and students in operating equipment.

•Perform and assist in other research-related laboratory work.

•Conform to and enforce laboratory safety policies and protocols in the labs. 

•Purchase and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment.

•Drop off and pick up materials and supplies from local stores/vendors according to the laboratory’s needs.

•Interface with USC FPM, EH&S, and other vendors related to equipment purchases, laboratory/facilities renovations/upgrades, and safety compliance.

•Other duties as assigned by the Chair, including but not limited to event support and department maintenance requests.

Job duties may be added or modified as needed.

The Senior Lab Technician is required to maintain a USC P-Card for laboratory purchases and maintain a valid driver’s license in California. This is an onsite position at USC’s University Park Campus in Los Angeles, California. This position is not eligible for remote work.
