AMERICAN SAMOA RIDGE TO REEF PROGRAM LEAD - ID# 225045.

Regular, Part-Time (25% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Water Resources Research Center, located in American Samoa.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $1,084 - $1,733/Mon. (@25% FTE) 

DUTIES:  Provides high-level guidance and strategic oversight to ensure all project activities align with objectives and timelines. Develops and executes detailed work plans to meet project milestones effectively. Mentors undergraduate and graduate students, fostering their professional development and active participation in research. Coordinates student involvement in fieldwork, data collection, and analysis, ensuring alignment with project goals. Collaborates with local agencies, such as the American Samoa EPA and community organizations, and federal partners to align project objectives with regional priorities. Facilitates effective communication between UH researchers and stakeholders in American Samoa. Leverages knowledge of Samoan cultural practices and protocols to build trust and maintain respectful relationships with community members and stakeholders. Incorporates cultural considerations into project planning and execution to ensure relevance and sustainability. Co-leads project reporting efforts, including drafting reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders. Ensures timely and accurate communication of project updates, challenges, and successes. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Marine Science, Biology, Forestry, Natural Resources Management, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

Two to four (2-4) years of experience working with undergraduate and graduate students, coordinating and engaging with government agencies, community groups, and researchers. Experience facilitating and coordinating workshops in American Samoa. Practical experience conducting fieldwork in American Samoa. Proficiency in logistics, budgeting, and reporting.

KNOWLEDGE

In-depth knowledge of cultural practices and protocols in American Samoa. Familiarity with government agency operations, community collaboration, and multi-stakeholder coordination. Knowledge of field data collection methods in tropical environments and research ethics in culturally sensitive settings to ensure respectful and impactful engagement. Understanding of American Samoa’s ecosystems, cultural practices and community dynamics (fa’a Samoa). Knowledge of designing and facilitating workshops and creating educational materials for diverse audiences.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Effective mentoring skills and support for undergraduate and graduate students. Ability to foster collaboration and guide research projects. Strong communication and organizational skills to engage with government agencies, community groups, and researchers. Proven ability to manage multi-stakeholder projects. Skills in planning, facilitating, and reporting workshops. Ability to integrate traditional knowledge into professional settings. Ability to deliver quality outcomes on time.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Experience developing educational or outreach materials tailored to diverse audiences, including students, community groups, and policymakers. Familiarity with grant writing, reporting, or securing funding to support research and engagement activities.
