We are looking for a dedicated Payroll Accountant to join our team in Orangeburg, South Carolina. In this role, you will oversee and manage payroll processing and related accounting functions to ensure compliance with institutional policies and regulatory standards. This Contract-to-long-term position offers the opportunity to contribute to the efficient and accurate delivery of payroll services for a higher education institution.
Responsibilities:
• Process bi-weekly and monthly payrolls with precision, ensuring timely and accurate handling of adjustments, terminations, and data entry using Paycom.
• Collaborate with HR and departmental administrators to guarantee the submission of accurate payroll data.
• Reconcile payroll general ledger accounts within Jenzabar, ensuring all payroll-related expenses and liabilities are properly documented.
• Prepare and submit payroll-related journal entries while assisting with month-end and year-end financial closings.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations, including preparing and reconciling payroll tax filings and year-end reports such as W-2s.
• Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies, address employee inquiries, and respond to audit findings in a timely manner.
• Assist in developing and maintaining payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure operational efficiency.
• Generate payroll reports and provide data analysis as requested by management or senior leadership.
• Support internal reviews, external audits, and financial reporting requirements related to payroll.
• Stay informed about updates to payroll regulations and best practices, as well as changes within payroll and financial systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience in payroll accounting or financial operations, preferably in a higher education or nonprofit organization.
• Proficiency in payroll systems, with experience using Paycom and familiarity with Jenzabar or similar systems.
• Strong knowledge of payroll laws, tax regulations, and accounting principles.
• Exceptional attention to detail, coupled with strong organizational and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with a focus on providing outstanding customer service.
• Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost integrity.
• Experience with multi-state payroll processing and familiarity with labor laws applicable to higher education institutions is a plus.
