Engineering Aide I, II, III and Miscellaneous Seasonal Workers
DUTIES
(The duties listed below are illustrative of the work performed by this classification. All duties are essential functions of the job unless otherwise noted. The percentage of time allocated to each group of duties is approximate.)
50 % Time:
Conduct field surveys and special studies; performing calculations and recording results and data
Operate survey instruments and apply current surveying principles, practices and standards to gather and record data as appropriate for project
Measure and record angles, distances and elevations; perform mathematical calculations and transfer information to cross-section paper
Record object (e.g., trees, signs) location coordinates and data
Determine and record coordinates for private, county and township property boundaries and right-of-ways
Photograph or otherwise record miscellaneous data for inspectors (e.g., elevation, curbs, catch basins, etc.)
Research old surveys for information
Setting up field markers/stakes prior to start of construction projects, identifying boundaries, objects, topographical grades of significance
25% Time:
Supervision
Review application materials
Schedule employees for work and assign tasks
Review employee record of time worked to verify accuracy
Determine and secure an adequate supply of working equipment (complete with appropriate safety guards) needed to perform the work
Conduct orientation and training programs for new employees including the demonstration of proper methods for equipment operation, safety techniques and practices
Review work in progress; adjusting work methods as necessary to ensure timely completion and high quality of work. Review work upon completion
Observe and record employee performance-related incidents for use in compiling performance evaluations. Recommend disciplinary action as necessary and discuss performance issues with employees.
15% Time
Department Administrative Support
Work cooperatively with other departments to meet goals, support the mission of the Engineer’s Office and serve the citizens
Attend and actively participate in department and other meetings
Provide input for the department budget, long-range planning, policies and procedures
Gather and compile data as requested by supervisor including record of materials and labor per project
Respond to inquiries and complaints from the general public
10% Time
Miscellaneous duties
Inspect equipment and vehicles; cleaning and noting maintenance needs
Install and maintain GPS control points, elevation benchmarks and monument boxes
Perform other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education and Experience: Three years experience conducting field surveys supplemented by on-the-job or relevant post-high school training or an Associate’s degree in Engineering.
A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Operate these and similar tools and equipment for a standard work shift, in accordance with customary operating and safety practices:
Office Equipment and Software
Data Collector - Collecting topographical survey data
Total Station - Calculating and recording angles and distances
GPS - Collecting RTK data
Calculator - Perform mathematical calculations
Hand and Power Tools
Jack, claw, chipping and sledge hammer - Installing monument boxes, pounding nails, rebar
Medium to Heavy Motorized Equipment
Automobile - Visit work sites
Develop, plan and implement schedules to complete survey work necessary to support the work of the Engineer’s Office
Obtain and see to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work
Supervise the daily work of others and ensure that work is accomplished
Develop and implement training and orientation programs
Communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing
Maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and co-workers
Complete simple to moderately complex departmental reporting forms and reports
Operate standard office equipment
Perform work of a physical nature for short periods of time
Follow simple to moderately complex instructions
License or Certification Required:
Valid State of Ohio Drivers’ License with a driving record acceptable to the Engineer’s Office insurance provider
Certified CPR, AED and First Aid
Physical Demands:
Frequently - Standing for long periods of time, walking and climbing stairs, getting in and out of vehicle and lifting light weight (less than 20 pounds).
Occasionally – lifting moderate to heavy weight (more than 20 pounds) and working in awkward or confined positions.
Incumbents frequently work outdoors where they are exposed to extremes in weather and temperature.
Incumbents frequently work alongside roadways with active traffic.
