We are the Federally recognized governing body for the community of Bethel, Alaska. This recognition is per Federal Register/Vol.6, No. 49/Monday, March 13, 2000/Notices for the community of Bethel.
We are governed by council of a Traditional Chief, a Chairperson, a Vice Chairperson, a Secretary/Treasurer and four Members. Council Members are elected by Tribal Membership annually. Officers are then appointed by the current members of the council.
Bethel is located along the delta of the Kuskokwim River, approximately 90 miles inland from the Bering Sea and approximately 398 miles northwest of Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. We are the central hub of the Kuskokwim Delta, a network of 56 villages and area the size of the state of New York. The Native Village of Bethel is a community which includes Bethel Native Corporation formed under the December 18, 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA).
We provide many services including natural resource management, housing, energy assistance, education assistance, social services, and Tribal Justice.
Our ability and capacity to lead in numerous aspects of governance has garnered recognition and influence in regional, statewide, and national platforms. The key to our success is in our ability to network with people, agencies, and other communities that impact our daily lives. We have learned to seek the best out of each situation and move forward to become a better community.
