Job Description

As a Quality Control Manager at one of our Alaska seafood processing facilities, you'll oversee all aspects of quality assurance and food safety. Your duties include developing and implementing quality control programs, conducting inspections and audits, analyzing quality data, and ensuring compliance with regulations. You'll lead a team of quality control professionals, provide training, and foster a culture of excellence. By maintaining the highest standards of product quality and safety, you'll contribute to the success of our seafood processing operation.  

Essential Functions/Qualifications 

The responsibilities of the position include the following:  

    • Ensure the facility is in compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as applicable customer and third-party requirements.  
    • Supervise and mentor a team of department QC Leads  
    • Train QC staff on company specifications and assess information retention, retraining where necessary.  
    • Prepare reports to communicate involvement and results of quality assurance activities to production.  
    • Check and compare QC Leads data with real time data.  
    • Formally audit the facility monthly for regulatory non-compliances and reports findings to management.  
    • Work with QC Leads on paperwork issues.  
    • Coordinate facility audits and host auditors and customers during their visit.  
    • Maintain Food Safety Programs including but not limited to HACCP, SSOP and GMP; ensuring the programs are effective throughout the facility.  
    • Train all departments on company and regulatory policies.  
    • Responsible for CCP's throughout the process.  
    • Where food safety programs are vulnerable, identify the root cause and make changes to prevent recurrence.  
    • Perform mock recalls and mass balances to test the traceability program.  
    • Monitor employees and re-train where necessary.  
    • Act as the foremost authority on the food safety program within the facility.  
    • Supervise and mentor QC staff to uphold company standards and policies as well as collect and document accurate metrics to ensure standards are met.  
    • Where microbiological lab-work is required, manage lab functions, and protect the integrity of the lab and results. Communicate results and follow protocol in the event of adverse test result.  
    • Perform various tasks for corporate QC and sales representatives.  
    • Other duties are to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful

    Inspection Techniques: Proficiency in various inspection techniques, including visual, dimensional, and functional testing. 
    Data Analysis: Skill in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting quality data to identify trends and patterns. Computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office, are required.  
    Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve quality issues effectively. 
    Root Cause Analysis: Skill in conducting root cause analyses to determine the underlying causes of quality problems.

    Communication: Effective communication skills to interact with all levels of the organization, including management, production staff, and customers. 
    Decision-Making: Ability to make informed decisions quickly and effectively.

    Education and Experience  

    • High school diploma or GED.  
    • At least 3 years of Quality Control experience in a seafood processing facility, preferably with whitefish and salmon.  
    • Knowledge and/or NSF certifications in HACCP, Food & Science Microbiology, Food & Safety Quality, GFSI Training (Required).  
    • Knowledge of relative safety/food standards. Proficiency with office applications, and aptitude for learning new software and systems. HACCP certification prior to the season is required.  

    Work Environment and Schedule  

    In this role as a Quality Control Manager in an Alaskan seafood processing plant often works in a demanding, fast-paced environment. The work can be physically demanding, requiring long hours, especially during peak fishing seasons. This role will involve time on the processing floor, monitoring production lines, inspecting equipment, and taking samples. They may also work in a laboratory setting, conducting tests and analyzing data. Position requires onsite presence at our Alaska Processing Facility, and the ability to travel, spending a significant amount of time during the season at our various locations and processing facilities in Alaska. 

    Physical Demands  

    The role frequently requires standing for extended periods, walking throughout the plant, and bending or kneeling to inspect equipment and product. The manager may also need to lift and carry items, such as samples or boxes of products, which can range from light to moderately heavy. Additionally, the work environment can be cold and wet, particularly in Alaskan plants, and may expose the manager to varying temperatures and humidity levels.
