Position Summary
Recognizing the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at the University at Buffalo (UB) seeks applicants with a strong research background in AI for a multi-departmental faculty cluster that will engage collaboratively on a variety of shared problems that can benefit from the application of emerging data science tools. Faculty appointments at all three levels (assistant, associate, and full professor) are anticipated, with one hire in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at UB.

The cluster will emphasize a new model for multidisciplinary collaboration, both among faculty within this group and with existing colleagues across SEAS and UB. Applicants should have a strong and demonstrated commitment to engagement in collaborative research and education. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor graduate students, advise students at all levels, and maintain an active research program. The successful candidate for an Associate Professor or Full Professor position should have a record of scholarly accomplishments, teaching experience, and a sustained externally funded research program.

A total of 10 junior faculty received NSF CAREER awards in the past 4 years, with 5 of them coming in 2019 which sets a national record.

Our faculty members are actively involved in cutting-edge research and successful interdisciplinary programs and centers devoted to algorithms and theory; artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data mining; biometrics; biomedical computing and bioinformatics; computational and data science and engineering; computer architecture and hardware; computer vision and multimedia systems; computing education; computer security, cryptography, and privacy; connected and autonomous vehicles and sustainable transportation; database systems; distributed systems and networks; edge computing and embedded systems; information integrity; high performance computing; human-computer interaction; mobile computing; natural language processing; programming language and software engineering; operating systems; robotics; and society and computing. Our faculty has an excellent publication record.

Since 2015, the department has moved up its rank to be among the top 35 on csrankings.org and is among the top 25 in two recent years (2017 and 2019). During the same period, our research expenditure has grown from $4.5 million (for AY 2015- 2016) to $10 million (AY 2022-2023).
