Director of Engineering, AI Studio

Minimum qualifications:

  • 15 years of experience in software engineering leadership roles, with experience building developer-facing products or platforms.
  • Software engineering experience in cloud-based development. Experience with Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar ML frameworks.
  • Experience in generative AI concepts (e.g., LLMs, fine tuning, distillation, function calling and orchestration etc.), development workflows, and use cases.
  • Experience with developer needs, translating them into software tools and experiences.

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Information Systems, or related disciplines with technical expertise in one or more of the above mentioned areas or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience applying AI solutions and ML-related technologies to solve real-world AI/ML problems in consumer or enterprise applications.
  • An innovative mindset with the ability to identify emerging trends in AI and developer tools, and translate them into actionable strategies.
  • Active participation in the AI/ML open-source community or relevant industry consortia.

About the job

As the Engineering Director for AI Studio, you'll become a key driving component behind our mission to deliver the best possible experience for Generative AI developers. You’ll drive the strategy, roadmap, and engineering execution for the graduation of AI Studio as a product for the Machine Learning (ML) community. You will integrate AI Studio user journey as part of Google's ML developer journey. You will integrate AI Studio backend systems into Cloud backend systems with respect to infrastructure, serving, billing, and user experience.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $278,000-$399,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Define and advocate for an innovative roadmap for Google Cloud's generative AI development tools and interfaces. Balance innovation, user research, and industry trends to push the boundaries of developer experience.
  • Build, mentor, and inspire a team of engineers focused on crafting software development kits (SDKs), IDE plugins, CLIs, visualization tools, and MLOps optimized for generative AI model life-cycle and generative AI based application development workflows.
  • Partner closely with the broader Vertex AI teams, Google developer API team and Dev Hub teams, Cloud AppEco teams, CoreML, and Google deepmind teams, and external developer communities to align tool development with real-world use cases and pain points.
  • Act as an advocate for developers, understanding their needs and ensuring that the Vertex AI Developer Experience Team delivers solutions that delight and empower users.
