Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor-Resident Director
The St. Edward's University Department of Performing Arts/Mary Moody Northen Theatre invites applications for a full-time, 9 month, Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor-Resident Director to begin in Fall 2020. The ideal candidate will have expertise in a range of approaches to acting and directing. Additional skills in teaching devised works for majors and non-majors is desirable. Desired secondary expertise may include (but is not limited to): stage combat, Michael Chekhov, Suzuki, Viewpoints, and/or other movement pedagogies. In addition, the successful candidate will bring knowledge of new play development and a demonstrated commitment to supporting the work of writers and directors of color as well as educating a highly diverse student population.
The Resident Director serves as the theater's primary in-house curator and represents the University in the larger community. Mary Moody Northen Theatre (MMNT) serves as the professional producing arm of the St. Edward's University Department of Performing Arts theater training program and operates as a "learning laboratory" where students apply skills gained in the classroom to the practical work required in bringing a dramatic text from page to stage. The Resident Director is a faculty member and will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Performing Arts.
This faculty position will be filled at the Visiting Assistant (non-tenure-track, renewable), Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate (tenured) Professor level depending on qualifications and experience. Compensation will also depend on qualifications and experience.
For consideration, a M.F.A. or equivalent terminal degree in Theater Arts or a related theatre discipline. Minimum 3 years teaching, mentoring and advising experience at the university or professional level (full or part-time). Professional directing and producing experience. Demonstrated results in advancing diversity and multiculturalism. A current, ongoing, and recognized theatrical or performance practice of at least 5 years. A commitment to continuing work in the profession. Membership in a professional theatrical union. Preferred season planning and secondary area of teaching experience in movement related pedagogies. Preferred proven ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms and a deep understanding of and appreciation for the theatre production process. Preferred recruiting experience Ability to contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds in accordance with the Holy Cross. Must possess the ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
