Organization Description:
Vecinos is a non-profit, 501(c)3 Free Clinic that provides bilingual integrated primary and mental health care, mobile clinic services, health education, and case management to uninsured, low-income adults in the far-western NC counties. We offer a positive, supportive, and team-oriented atmosphere. We work in a non-traditional environment with limited resources. Schedules and hours vary throughout the year.
Purpose:
The Phlebotomist works in the laboratory, taking blood samples from patients and adequately labeling them with their information. They conduct a wide range of tests to identify underlying conditions to assist medical providers with diagnosis and patient care.
Job Responsibilities
- Identify patients and their personal information
- Determine the right venipuncture method based on patient age, health, etc.
- Reassure patients and help them relax
- Find veins that are suitable for puncture
- Draw blood using sterilized needles, vials, and other equipment
- Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples
- Label samples correctly and send or deliver them for testing
- Answer patient questions and provide useful information
- Keep accurate records on fluid specimens and tests
- Adhere to all relevant health and safety standards while working
- Assist as needed with in-office procedures, including EKGs, pap smears and biopsies
- Assist the Medical Assistant with point of care testing as needed
- Administer vaccinations, including documentation in the NCIR
- Medical interpretation as needed
Required Qualifications
- Native, or near-native English/Spanish fluency
- Experience working in a primary care setting as a Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist
- Previous experience working in electronic health records
- Able to work effectively as a team member and work closely with nurses, physicians, community health workers, and other clinic staff
- Cultural sensitivity, a caring and confident demeanor, flexibility, dependability, excellent written and verbal communication skills, a professional attitude, desire to serve uninsured/underserved populations
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified phlebotomist or medical assistant certification in the state of North Carolina and maintenance of appropriate certifications. Applicants who are working towards certification will be considered.
- Experience in an integrated (primary and mental health) care setting
- Working knowledge of farmworker-specific medicine
- Medical interpreter training and experience
