Continuously observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Explains and enforces safety rules, pool regulations, and water safety policies. Checks the safety of the swimming area and patron use area to include pool deck and/or beach front area. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area. Rescues swimmers in danger, promptly administers first aid to injured swimmers, and calls for medical assistance (if and when needed). Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions, ocean conditions of rough water or hazards, and recommends closing swimming areas until safe conditions prevail. When working at pools, may operate water pumps and control chemical additives to ensure pool water meets specified standards. May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming area to include: cleaning of bath houses, wading pools, main pools, pool decks, beach areas, sunbathing areas, etc. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and PACAF family days and holidays. Performs other related duties as assigned.

There are about 3,500 U.S. military personnel assigned to Misawa, along with 300 U.S. civilian employees and more than 1,000 local national employees.

NAF employment is considered federal employment. It is, however, different from federal civil service employment because the monies used to pay the salaries of NAF employees come from a different source. Civil service positions are paid for by money appropriated by Congress.
