Provide patient and family focused medical care for the remote villages on Kodiak Island consistent with the highest recognized standards of clinical medicine. Duties will include primary care, chronic care, urgent care, after hours emergency call coverage, emergency stabilization and transport, and exceptional communication with colleagues.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned:

  • Uphold KANA’s Code of Ethics by conducting professional activities with honesty, integrity, respect, fairness, and good faith in a manner that reflects positively upon the organization.
  • Primarily provides medical services in Kodiak’s remote villages. Provides healthcare to infants, children, adolescents, adults, pregnant persons, and geriatric patients. All patients are treated in a person-centered, non-judgmental manner that best supports the patient’s goals.
  • This village-based position will be rotational, generally in 2-4 week intervals, to provide complete coverage to Kodiak’s remote village communities. It will include routine outpatient medicine and minor outpatient procedures, telemedicine by video and/or telephone to other village sites, and after-hours emergency coverage for assessment, stabilization, and transport of emergency patients as needed. Transportation to and between remote villages will generally be by small aircraft.
  • Perform routine general medical and specialized duties that fall within an APP’s technical and educational expertise to Alaska Natives and other Beneficiaries of KANA, as well as other patient populations served by KANA at any designated clinic site.
  • Occasionally provide same-day clinic services in KANA’s Kodiak clinics.
  • Consult a supervising or designated physician when any unfamiliar, uncommon, or unstable conditions arise. All emergencies will be discussed with the on-call physician.            
  • Remain current in improvements in the field of medicine and strive to incorporate those improvements into the program when appropriate, maintaining licensure and other credentials as required.
  • Follow established protocols for patient referrals within and outside the Alaska Tribal Health system.
  • Actively participate in KANA’s quality improvement activities. Participate in adaptation of QI projects to our village communities.
  • Monitor and share necessary information to facilitate risk prevention activities with management. Participate in peer review with other providers.
  • Continually strive to improve the patient experience and quality of care including patient access, continuity, team-based care, clinical information systems, patient self-management, and community engagement.
  • Flexibility and creative problem solving are core requirements of this position. Village travel and medical care can be unpredictable due to weather and other factors, and a successful village APP will be able to adjust schedules and care delivery based on available resources.
  • Participate as an integral member of the health division in the provision of medical services by collaborating with other health professionals to provide KANA patients with complete and comprehensive care.
  • Establish a primary care relationship with village populations.
  • Represent KANA in a positive and respectful manner assisting in the promotion and maintenance of good public relations among staff, community groups, and professional organizations.
  • Behave in a wholly professional way at all times in the village communities, and strictly maintain professional boundaries with village populations. Promote and maintain professional staff relationships.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, management, community members, tribal leadership, and other KANA staff.
  • Practice meaningful customer service addressing patient and staff needs courteously and promptly.
  • Consider fiscal responsibility when creating and advising patient action plans.
  • Participate in and support group decisions.  Behave in a manner consistent with group goals.
  • Documentation in the EMR will be accurate and timely, as outlined in the KANA Medical Clinic policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and participate in community outreach programs, serve on KANA committees, and prepare reports or other documentation as directed.
  • Attend all OSHA, HIPAA, and other regulatory compliance training as directed.
  • Accurately and promptly provide coding, billing or other financial information to KANA billing and Finance staff and follow up insurance pre-authorizations as required or when requested. 
  • Work with Purchased and Referred Care to prioritize medical needs of patients; work within the PRC budget to ensure financial stability.

Supervisory Responsibilities This position may assist in the clinical supervision of medical students, APP students, residents, Community Health Aides, and other clinical staff.

 

Requirements: Current Certification by the National Commission of Physician’s Associates or Current Certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or American Nurse Credentialing Center, (NP).  Current Alaska license and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. ACLS, NRP, ATLS, ALSO and PALS as required for specialty. Post training clinical experience in specialty preferred. APP must have collaborating agreement with current member of KANA medical staff. Must success fully pass the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention (ICPA) background check.
