Job Description
The Manager of Multimedia serves as a key leader within Syracuse University’s creative team and a key liaison to the digital team. The Manager of Multimedia oversees a team of digital content creators (shooters/editors) and works closely with the managers of video and photography to assign additional resources as needed (motion graphic designers, producers, photographers, videographers, editors). This role is responsible for capturing/editing video & photography, as well as working with the executive director of Multimedia on process and deliverables, and ensuring alignment with broader strategic goals. The Manager is responsible for day-to-day oversight of a multimedia team skilled in photography and video production, with a focus on producing timely/relevant digital content. The Manager works in lockstep with the content/digital teams to bring to life, in compelling ways, multimedia stories/content related to people, activities, and information that is relevant to key audiences. Responsible for stewarding the Syracuse University brand by bringing it to life through effective, compelling and consistent multimedia storytelling and content generation that aims to galvanize target audience in service of advancing University goals and priorities.
Education and Experience
  • · A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of experience developing strategic creative, multimedia programs.
  • A minimum of 2 years leading teams or serving in a supervisory role.
  • Portfolio to demonstrate multimedia excellence as part of broader campaigns that yielded tangible results. Showcasing competitive expertise in video production.
  • Proven experience in managing multimedia teams and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong understanding of multimedia production processes.
  • Strong creative portfolio
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Understands multimedia delivery across multiple mediums and the impact of how to deliver multimedia project across mobile, digital and other platforms. 
  • Dynamic, contemporary modern marketer with deep experience in multimedia production and storytelling, scriptwriting, multichannel marketing.
  • Portfolio to demonstrate multimedia excellence as part of broader campaigns that yielded tangible results.
  • Significant experience and technical understanding shooting, editing and archiving systems and approaches.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with leadership, supervisors, colleagues, and media. Must have strong interpersonal skills. Must move with urgency and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A team player. Works collaboratively with diverse groups inside and outside of the University. Experience working in a team-centric operation. Outstanding communication and organizational skills are necessary. This individual must be able to work well with an exceptionally wide range of people including senior executive and administrative staff; deans, faculty; students; media representatives; volunteers and other employees.
  • Calm under pressure. Can manage stressful situations in a solution-oriented way with a positive attitude.
  • Must also have the ability to oversee and execute multiple projects simultaneously while working effectively under the pressure of last minute deadlines and changing priorities. Is proactive and takes initiative. Functions effectively, both independently and as a member of a team, with a willingness to assist with routine and last minute projects.
  • Demonstrate creativity for unique series-driven approaches to a variety of topics, platforms and audiences
  • Understanding of digital media platforms and social media
  • Requires intermediate to advanced knowledge of video post-production related software including, but not limited to Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator, and Photoshop
  • Skills of Writing and Producing for online audiences
  • Working knowledge of asset management systems, Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Close visual acuity to perform tasks related the production of content
  • Ability to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction
  • Frequently moves Audio/Visual equipment across campus to various sites and for events; ability to move, lift, set up and break down photography and videography equipment. Ability to lift 25-50 lbs. repeatedly at multiple assignments.
  • Flexibility and ability to position oneself to shoot a variety of images. Photo/video shoots may require standing, sitting, and kneeling for 4-8 hours.
Responsibilities
  • Manages day-to-day operation of multimedia team, ensuring creative output brings the brand to life in meaningful and dynamic ways to advance the brand and organizational goals. Well versed in modern marketing trends and practices. Understands and can lead team to leverage multimedia to advance digital and content marketing programs. Works in deep collaboration with other leaders to move content strategies forward by assigning teams to move story ideas from concept through completion in a timely and effective way. Works to ensure storytelling is strategically oriented, coordinated and effective at achieving stated goals. Guides teams working on higher-end productions as well as daily quick-turn content. Trouble-shoots and removes obstacles to ensure timely and relevant content to go to market on our channels. Ensure brand strategy is brought to life effectively and consistently. Provides review and sign off on pieces, presents some pieces for review to senior leadership.
  • Provides creative leadership within group and across teams. Serve as a hands-on leader, actively involved in all stages of video production, editing, and post-production. Provides structure and guidance. Works effectively with Creative Directors and other channel leads, by contributing creative ideas and ultimately activating the team to ensure alignment with strategic priorities and deliver effective multimedia content on budget and schedule.
    Works with ED of Multimedia to build and effectively implement strategic and operational plan for multimedia area. Understands technological needs and helps implement effective workflow within team, tied to Workfront and other teams within the Division. Streamlines process and puts in place successful infrastructure, particularly related to “quick turn” projects. Ensures product is delivered on time and on budget. Is an effective communicator. The Manager is excellent at project planning, and trouble-shooting to ensure teams of shooters and editors are nimble, resourceful and agile in moving dozens of projects with speed from concept through completion.
  • Partners with Director of Marketing Technology to put in place and leverage modern technology solutions and hardware inventory management. Responsible for ensuring systems allow for appropriate digitizing, archiving and logging of multimedia content so it is searchable and well maintained. Tracks impact/engagement measures to guide creative decision making.
  • Shapes best-in-class creative culture, mentoring talent and facilitation of career growth.
