The Opportunity

Our Diagnostics business currently has an opportunity for the role of Staff Cloud Infrastructure Engineer​. This position works out of our Lake Forest, IL location in the Core Diagnostics Division. This is a technical role with the candidate expected to be a contributor to building compelling informatics products within Abbott’s Diagnostics Division.

The individual will participate in the development and deployment of system and software architecture to support informatics development programs. She/he will also be responsible for supporting on-market products post-launch. The individual is responsible for the design, development, evolution, and maintenance of Cloud Infrastructure for deploying SaaS Applications utilizing Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes.Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers. Core Diagnostics products and associated manufacturing processes are developed and commercialized under a comprehensive quality system which complies to regulatory authority requirements for country’s Abbott supplies product to.

What You’ll Work On

  • The individual will be responsible for designing, developing and releasing of Cloud Platform Infrastructure on Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes via GitOps using Helm and Flux CD, following Agile methodologies.
  • Create and package Helm charts for deployment of PaaS Infrastructure.
  • Work with Application Development Teams to build Platform Infrastructure components and services (e.g., Observability, Auditing, etc.) using IaC (Infrastructure-as-Code).
  • Work with Application Development teams to develop Platform Services (e.g., Data Pipelines, Storage Services, Secure File Upload Services, Disaster Recovery, Security etc.) on Microsoft Azure. 
  • Setup and maintain build workflows using GitHub GitActions.
  • Develop and document technical designs for integration and implementation of new cloud applications and systems including infrastructure.
  • The individual will be responsible for root cause analysis including troubleshooting of build and deployment related issues for platform and applications.
  • The individual will work as part of cross-functional teams to deliver informatics products.  Mentor and train junior engineers.
  • An individual contributor in this position may travel occasionally within the U.S or abroad as required per project assignment.

Position Accountability / Scope

  • The individual is responsible for design, development and deployment of Platform Infrastructure on Azure Cloud and Kubernetes. 
  • Automate the deployment and lifecycle management of applications and infrastructure on Kubernetes using Flux CD.
  • Evaluate design options, lead proof-of-concepts and propose optimal design compatible with overall platform architecture.
  • Document infrastructure designs and seek input from Platform Architect during implementation.  Utilize various Azure Resources (e.g., ADF, Storage, SFTP etc.) to build centralized platform services for applications deployed on the platform.
  • Utilize GitOps to manage platform and application configurations and provide inputs to application teams as applicable in deployment of applications on Azure Kubernetes clusters across various environments (e.g., development, test etc.).
  • Participate in all aspects of the cloud environment, including provisioning, scaling, monitoring, and security.  Optimize cloud costs via configuration and platform design along with Azure Cost Savings. 
  • The individual will be responsible for Build and Release Management, CI/CD, Cloud based deployments for containerized workloads (Docker, Kubernetes etc.) for informatics products.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, YOU’LL BRING

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science or similar engineering discipline including Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering is required.
  • 10+ years of experience with Azure Cloud infrastructure and platform services (e.g., Identity management, VPN, Network Access Controls, Data Pipelines, Storage, Cloud Security etc.). 
  • Expert knowledge on Kubernetes and Helm Charts.  Azure and/or Kubernetes certification is preferred.
  • Strong experience with GitOps to manage infrastructure and application configurations.
  • Strong experience in infrastructure architecture design and implementation.
  • Experience setting up robust observability and monitoring infrastructure (e.g., Prometheus/ Grafana etc.).
  • Candidate must have strong computer networking knowledge.
  • Programming expertise in one or more using C, Go, Rust, JavaScript languages.
  • Experience in using Terraform for infrastructure as code implementation.
  • Experience in configuring and deploying database technologies.
  • Expertise in Linux; strong expertise in shell scripting is required.
  • The candidate must have strong knowledge in maintaining DevOps tools and technologies such as GitHub, Flux, Kustomize, Artifactory, Code Scanning Tools etc.
  • The candidate must possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • The individual must have prior experience operating in Scrum-based development teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in Computer Science or Software Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering is preferred.  
  • Familiarity with Data Privacy Practices (e.g., GDPR) across cloud regions is a plus. 
  • Familiarity with AWS is a plus.

The base pay for this position is $97,300.00 – $194,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
