Weekly Hours: 40
Role Number:200588356
Our mission is to personalize the user experience on Apple devices based on where you go, when, and what those places mean to you. We’re building intelligent devices that understand where their users are, and what they want to accomplish there. You’re experiencing our work whenever you see a suggested location in Maps, interact with outings or trips in Journaling Suggestions, or browse your Memories in Photos. We’re looking for motivated, experienced engineers to help take our software to the next level of capability, quality, and impact. Do you have experience associating users and devices with points of interest on a map? Do you have a background in GPS/GNSS, WiFi location, or embedded sensing, and are looking to move up the stack? Are you excited by the optimization problem of providing rich contextual intelligence within a compact resource footprint? If these describe you, read on.

Description

In this job, you’ll be part of a team of software engineers, sensing the points of interest on the map that devices visit. You’ll contribute to new and improved user experiences, in partnership with teams in sensing, Siri, and apps. Hungry for the responsibility to work on complex problems from end to end? You’ll design, build, and evaluate production algorithms and software systems to infer the place a device is at, using multiple sensors—GPS, WiFi, accelerometer, and others—and a combination of estimation and ML techniques. You’ll test your work, dogfood it, collect metrics, and iterate. Don’t forget to sweat the edge cases—an issue that impacts a couple percent of a couple billion devices is a big issue.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 + years experience shipping production software for mobile and/or other resource-constrained devices. Tight memory, CPU, and schedule constraints motivate you and ignite your creativity. We use Objective-C and Swift, but if you know modern C++ or another compiled object-oriented language, you shouldn’t have a problem.
  • Working knowledge of probability, statistics, and machine learning. You’ve trained and executed models for use in real-world applications.
  • Laser focus on customer impact and product experience.
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.

Key Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on professional background in location and/or other wireless sensing technologies, including for example, GPS/GNSS, WiFi, indoor localization, and/or discrete localization.
  • Excellent communication, verbally and in writing. You can succeed in a collaborative environment, and are comfortable with what will sometimes feel like a high degree of uncertainty.
  • You can innovate within tight memory, CPU, and schedule constraints, and deliver on time. These constraints motivate you, and ignite your creativity.
