Position Summary
SUNY Geneseo is accepting applications for a temporary position of Pre-Health Career Advisor.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Pre-Health Career Advisor provides academic advising and graduate program guidance through individual coaching, advising, and programming to undergraduate students. They will serve as the first point of contact for early-phase students interested in pre-health, allied health, or other helping professions.

This advisor will collaborate with individuals and offices across campus, including the senior pre-med/pre-health advisor, admissions, academic departments, and student organizations, to develop programming to support students’ career interests and goals.

This advisor reports to the Director of the Career Design Center and will support the department’s goals to develop career paths and opportunities for students related to the health/helping professions. This role will utilize an early alert system to oversee student cases and connect them with appropriate resources such as coaching, tutors, and academic support. The pre-health career advisor will support all students pursuing a health-related career by ensuring necessary academic support is in place for all to succeed with particular focus on equity and access to pre-health support for underrepresented students. 
Required Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Relevant experience advising, mentoring, teaching, or coaching college students
  • Familiarity with tutoring, supplemental instruction, and other academic support services
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with professionals from a wide variety of disciplines, and related external organizations
  • Familiarity with health-related fields as well as knowledge of trends in medical/health professional school admissions
  • Demonstrated understanding of professional skills necessary to succeed in the health professions school admissions interview process
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree in biological sciences, life sciences, health sciences, higher education, counseling, or related field
  • Knowledge of college career development and career management systems

Function 1: Individual Student Advising

  • Offer daily appointments, weekly “drop-in” hours, and effectively refer students
  • Assist students in their self-assessment of interests and skills pertinent to academic work, co-curricular interests, and career options
  • Advise and mentor students as they consider health-related professional schools and programs
  • Provide coaching and career-related topics in the health professions along with early and general career advising as needed
  • Discuss options for adding/changing majors and/or minors and refer students to appropriate departments for advising by major department faculty advisers
  • Encourage students to realistically assess their strengths and weaknesses, develop habits of self-reflection, and embody a growth mindset
  • Serve as an informed resource for students and make referrals to appropriate support services when needed using case management software
  • Plan appropriate outreach to students with academic difficulty; provide targeted information to student cohorts through the use of the case management software
  • Provide accurate information about college courses, curriculum, and policies

  • Develop and implement resources and programs that support students’ exploration of health-related careers, general academic success, and development of core competencies
  • Contribute to the design and/or delivery of pre-health programming, workshops, and events that respond to the current needs of students as well as current trends
  • Develop affiliation agreements for pre-health students to conduct clinical observation hours and other related industry partnerships

  • Assist in programs related to the recruitment and retention of pre-health students and represent the college at admissions events with prospective students and their families

  • Serve as a liaison to other science or pre-health-related academic departments
  • Communicate with faculty, campus partners, and other administrators as needed
  • Participate in workshops and professional development from professional organizations such as the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions to keep abreast of the field
