Full-Time Core Faculty Position

Department of Respiratory Care

 

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health SA) is the leading academic medical center serving South Texas (see:  https://uthscsa.edu/).  UT Health SA includes the schools of medicine, nursing, dentistry, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the School of Health Professions (https://uthscsa.edu/health-professions/) and supports a large research and patient care enterprise.   

 

The Department of Respiratory Care within the School of Health Professions invites applications for the position of Full-time Faculty at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor, dependent on qualifications and experience.  Start date is negotiable, with a target of September 1, 2024. We are seeking an outstanding individual with the desire to advance the university, school, and department across the four university mission components of excellence in education, research, health care, and community engagement. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and related educational activities to include:
    • Teaching upper division bachelor’s and master’s degree program courses in the respiratory care programs. 
    • Participating in curriculum and program development, implementation, evaluation, and revision.
    • Supervising and instructing students during their clinical rotations, as assigned.  
    • Participation in activities related to the scholarship of teaching to include educational research, and publication and dissemination of educational materials (e.g., articles, book chapters, books).
  • Research to include assisting with the oversight of master’s degree students’ research projects and engaging in collaborative or independent research and scholarly activities with the goal of national invited presentations of original research findings, publication in recognized peer-reviewed journals and success in seeking external funding.
  • Professional and community service activities to include seeking and serving in professional leadership roles at the local, state, and national level.
  • Faculty may participate in the Faculty Practice Plan for patient care, as opportunities arise. 

 

This is a full-time (12-month) faculty position that reports to the Chair of the Department of Respiratory Care. Salary, academic rank/appointment, and tenure status will be commensurate with the education and experience of the successful candidate.

 

Qualifications: 

Required:

  • Doctoral degree preferred. However, a master’s degree, with the desire and motivation to seek a doctoral degree in health sciences or other relevant area (e.g., education, physiology, leadership) will be considered.
  • A valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential and eligibility or licensure in Texas as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.   
  • Significant clinical experience to include critical care and advanced practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical environments.
  • Active membership in AARC.

  

Preferred:

·         A doctoral degree (PhD preferred) awarded by an academic institution accredited by a regional or national agency that is recognized by the USDE, in an area related to respiratory care (e.g., health sciences, education, physiology, leadership).

·         Experience as a faculty member or as a clinical preceptor in an established respiratory care program.

·         Experience in conducting research and a track record of invited presentations and/or peer-reviewed publications.

Benefits Overview

UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Employees who work at least 20 hours a week, with an appointment of at least 4.5 months, are eligible for benefits.


Medical- UT SELECT Medical insurance is offered free for employees and administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Family members can be added to the plan through payroll deduction. Employees and their dependents can also receive discounted copays and coinsurance when using UT Health Physicians, a network of 800 premier physicians including more than 100 specialists.


Dental - Three dental insurance plan options are available for employees and their families through Delta Dental Insurance Company, two PPOs and one dental HMO plan. Both PPO plans allow employees to choose any licensed dentist.


Vision- Fully insured Vision Care benefits are offered by Superior Vision Services. Two vision plan options that offer either standard or enhanced vision benefits. Life Employees receive $40,000 of group term life insurance and $40,000 of basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance for free, with options to purchase additional employee and dependent coverage for both at group rates.


Retirement- Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.


Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:


Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.


Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.


Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.


Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year plus three floating holidays, which can be used anytime during the fiscal year.


FSAs- Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.


Discounts- Employees enjoy a range of discounts on services, tickets, and gym membership.
