Salary Range:

The BIOGEN Space & Facilities Coordinator is responsible for managing research space and facilities in support of the BioGen department's academic, research, and safety operations.
This role is ideal for individuals with a strong background in laboratory safety, space management, and/or compliance, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively across departments to ensure an efficient, productive, and safe research environment. The coordinator will work closely with faculty, staff, Facilities Management (FM), University Construction (UCon), Health Safety and Risk Management (HSRM) and Research Facilities Support Services (RFSS) to track and optimize space usage, implement safety protocols, and manage the logistics of lab moves, cleanouts, and equipment management.

Responsibilities:
(25%) Space Management, Planning, and Inventory Management:
Responsible for ensuring that Medical School and College of Biological Sciences space allocation models are followed - managing space assignments so they are aligned with user needs, working with department heads and occupants to understand and articulate departmental space needs, and functional requirements.
Conduct space planning and analysis, including fit studies, occupancy and utilization reviews, and identification of optimization options.
Maintain space and equipment inventory, updating floor plans, and tracking assigned space; help communicate space changes that need to be made and help faculty plan and execute lab moves.
Administrative center expert on using and managing systems like Tririga as well as internal processes to keep track of space.
(25%) Safety Management and Incident Response:
Act as the primary safety officer for assigned laboratories, enforcing compliance with safety regulations, conducting regular inspections, and coordinating safety training
sessions.
Investigate and document any lab-related incidents, developing preventive measures to mitigate future risks.
(25%) Lab Cleanouts/Moves:
Collaborate with faculty and department heads to coordinate timely, efficient lab moves and cleanouts in compliance with safety and disposal protocols.
Responsibilities include coordinating with Hazardous Waste Disposal, Building Management, and Radiation Safety, ensuring the appropriate documentation for disposal of capital equipment, and maintaining accurate records of all actions.
(25%) Project Work:
Work independently on projects, making critical decisions about timing, resource allocation, and approach to optimize outcomes effectively.

Qualifications



Required:
Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., facilities management, environmental safety, or biological sciences) plus at least 2 years of experience OR a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 6 years
Strong knowledge of lab safety protocols and compliance procedures.
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, with excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments and teams.
Experience with space management and facilities planning.
Knowledge of hazardous material handling, safety regulations, and compliance processes.
Preferred:
Experience working in a research or academic environment, particularly in biological or chemical labs.
Familiarity with the University of Minnesota's space management policies and procedures.
Certification in lab safety or a related field.
Familiarity with systems such as Tririga or similar space management software.

About the Department



The BioGen Administrative Center provides administrative services to the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics and the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development. Finance, human resources, administrative and grant pre-award staff members work in teams to support faculty, staff and students in these areas.

Pay and Benefits



Pay Range: $65,000-$70,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience
Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
