The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Duties include but not limited to:
• Investigates and examines the evidence of real property locations in the field.
• Plots survey results to create detailed base mapping.
• Supervises and trains field crew staff on the researching of records relating to the ownership and location of real property.
• Prepares survey maps for acquiring and managing State interest in real property and/or prepares digital terrain models and base mapping for the design of capital projects.
• Performs survey data processing, balancing, and transforming horizontal and vertical control.
• Performs research and analysis of private and public records necessary to trace title documents, preparation of survey reports, and contract preparation.
• Makes precise field measurements, supervises, and trains field crew staff in the operation of modern terrestrial, geodetic surveying, geographic positioning systems, proper field survey procedures and work zone safety.
• Evaluates, analyzes, and compiles field evidence and record documentation evidence to determine property and highway boundary lines.
• Plans and schedules work assignments for specific projects, and research records relating to the ownership and location of real property.
• Assists in the establishment of standards and procedures utilized in surveying/mapping and in the pursuit of technological advances.
• Assists in development of specifications for the procurement of surveying hardware and software.
• Assists in development and coordination of training programs for regional ROW mapping and survey groups.
• Supports regional survey units with equipment and operations assistance.
• Assists with Term Agreement for Surveying Services (T.A.S.S.) proposals, planning, scheduling, acquisition map review, and approval of claims for payment.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
Land Surveyor Trainee:
Either 1. Graduation from an Engineering Accreditation Commission, Engineering Technology Accreditation, or Commission Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited bachelor’s or higher degree program in surveying or surveying technology;
Or 2. Eligibility to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying examination through the National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying via letter issued by the New York State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying (proof of eligibility required).
As a Land Surveyor Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Land Surveyor, Grade 20. To advance to Assistant Land Surveyor, you must have obtained proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) and successfully completed the requirements of the traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority. At the discretion of the appointing authority, early advancement to the Assistant Land Surveyor is possible if you have obtained your FS and have successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship. It is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority’s personnel office upon obtaining proof of passing the FS. You may receive an increase in salary upon obtaining your FS. Information about this increase will be provided by the appointing authority.
Assistant Land Surveyor, SG-20:
Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Fundamentals of Surveying Examination or successful completion of 52 weeks of service as a Land Surveyor Trainee and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying examination.
Candidates may also be qualified for permanent appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

*This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. The starting salary for a Land Surveyor Trainee position is $66,951.
The starting salary for an Assistant Land Surveyor is $97,672. This amount is comprised of an increased hiring salary of $84,172 with an additional geographic pay up to $13,500, specific to this title and location.
The maximum compensation for this position is $107,621. This amount is comprised of the standard job rate of $94,121 with an additional geographic pay differential of $13,500, specific to this title and location.
In addition, a Mid-Hudson Adjustment of $2,000 or a Downstate Adjustment of $4,000 may also apply depending on the location of the position.
