Educational and Experience Requirement
High school graduate or GED equivalent. Eight years in grounds maintenance / landscaping or in a related field; with at least one-year supervisory experience. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Performs supervisory and hands on work in Horticulture & Landscape Design and related areas. Assigns and schedules the work of Landscape Services workers and ensures work completion and quality.
Primary Responsibilities
Assists with the design of landscape and horticulture to help maintain temperature, reduce noise and glare, and provide increased security. Landscape Horticulture includes a range of specialty areas: plant identification, landscape design, plant cultivation, and nursery and garden-center management. Inspects campus landscape to ensure work is completed properly and assists when needed. Supervises, schedules, coordinates, and participates in the work of Horticulture & Landscape Design for all Sam Houston State University (SHSU) campuses. Creates, presents, and oversees the development of landscapes for all SHSU campuses. Requires a creative eye for detail. Performs site analyses that includes the assessment of current plants, soil conditions, and lighting. Researches topics such as plants, plant safety to humans & wildlife and their ability to survive in an area, guidelines, and codes. Oversees progression of projects to ensure everything is going as planned. Maintains a safe working environment. Advises others regarding special assignments or changes in work routines. Assists in work activities to ensure goals and standards are met. Inspects work to ensure completion and quality. Assists in disciplinary actions and hiring decisions. Responsible for securing vehicles, gates, equipment, and ensuring the landscape warehouse is secure. Requisitions supplies and assists with equipment inventory records. Performs inventory of all horticulture, landscaping equipment, materials, etc. Trains employees by demonstrating safe & proper techniques and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
Knowledge of how ecological conditions can affect a proposed design. Requires inspection knowledge and experience. Basic computer skills are required. Ability to communicate efficiently is required. Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscape design & horticulture is required. Proficiency in all duties performed. Working conditions involve exposure to elements such as dirt, dust, heat, cold, chemicals, noise, vibration, and congested work area. Ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and other University employees and students. Ability to provide direction, training and performance reviews to subordinates is required.

Uniforms and identification badges are provided by the University according to departmental policy.

Weekends, holidays, and extended hours during emergencies may be required. Alertness and careful attention is required to prevent injury to others.

Position requires driving and operating a university vehicle; therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the University’s insurance carrier is required.
