Established in 1891, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University is a public, historically Black, land grant institution located in Greensboro, North Carolina. North Carolina A&T and other 1890 land-grant institutions were established by the Second Morrill Act, which expanded the system of land-grant universities to include a historically Black institution in those states where segregation denied people of color access to the land grant institutions established by the First Morrill Act in 1862.

The university has a strong legacy of social justice, activism, and community engagement. In 1960, four freshman students, often called the A&T Four or the Greensboro Four, sparked the civil rights movement in the South through their “sit in” at the Woolworths near campus. Demanding equal treatment and service, the “sit-in” grew to include college students from across the region.
