Job Title SFA Gardens Student Assistant (Work Study)
General Description
This is a student position responsible for assisting gardens technicians in maintaining the SFA Gardens and/or plant nurseries in a manner that ensures the health of the plant collection and the safety of visitors. Assists with special events and projects as assigned.
Job Duties
1. Assists in maintenance of garden beds, including planting, mulching, weeding and trimming under the direction of supervisor.
2. Maintains safe trails, including brush and debris removal and blowing leaves.
3. Assists in lawn maintenance using equipment including but not limited to zero-turn lawn mower, weed-eater, and tractor.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

1. Assists in greenhouse and plant nursery productions including plant propagation, weeding and watering.
2. Assists in landscape maintenance including planting, weeding, and watering.
3. Assists in gardens operations including inventory and record keeping.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
2. Ability to learn new skills quickly.
3. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
4. Ability to work outside in the elements year round.
5. Ability to work in areas with insects and wildlife.
Required Qualifications
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.

No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.

A student must be awarded and accept a “Work-Study Permit” for each semester the student will be working.
Preferred Qualifications
Skill in plant identification.
Experience working outdoors or in a garden setting.
Experience with plants and landscaping.
Experience with power tools including but not limited to zero-turn lawn mower, weed-eater, and tractor.
Physical Demands
Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
Moderate physical exertion required; intermittent periods of frequent standing and occasional heavy lifting.

Special Conditions for Eligibility
A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
