Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacy Shared Service Supervisor, the Specialty Technician II will perform a variety of duties related to preparing and dispensing drugs according to BILH Specialty Pharmacy's procedures and protocols. Assists the Shared Service Supervisor and the Specialty Pharmacy Lead Technician solve complicated insurance claims. Performs all required pharmacy tasks to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Works well with others and collaborates for overall pharmacy success of the department. Provides exceptional customer service and accommodates patient requests and resolves any concerns. Coordinates with the Shared Service Supervisor and the Specialty Lead Technicians on a weekly basis to help lead pharmacy improvements. Participates in the interviewing and training of new pharmacy staff. Also assists in overseeing pharmacy technicians, technician trainees and interns in order to optimize pharmacy workflow.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities

1.  Proficient in performing the duties of a Level 1 Call Center, Data Entry, and Fulfillment Specialty Pharmacy Technician.   

2. Participates in quality initiatives and process improvement efforts for prescription requests, prior authorizations, and education for providers, staff, and pharmacy updates.

3. Maintains knowledge with appropriate department policies and procedures & assists with any review/revision(s).

4. Supports change initiatives, by effectively adjusting work responsibilities due to new structures, processes, requirements or culture.

5. Build a trusting and working relationship with patients to identify strengths and barriers to medication access with the goal of supporting an individualized, patient-centered care plan.

6. Assist in training and supporting new staff and pharmacy students.

7. Adapts to changes in the departmental needs including but not limited to: offering assistance to other team members, floating, adjusting assignments, working on compliance projects, etc.

Required Qualifications:

1. High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred.

2. Active state certification with Board of Pharmacy in Massachusetts.

3. Active National Certification verified by PTCB and ExCPT.

4. Minimum 2 years of specialty pharmacy related work experience.

5. Ability to develop strong relationships with diverse groups of professionals (pharmacy staff, physicians, nurses, administration)

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv).

2. Knowledge of Epic, Compass Rose, Willow Ambulatory.

3. Previous experience with quality assurance or healthcare accreditation.

4. Knowledge and experience with 340b compliance and policies.

5. Previous experience with information systems, prescription prior authorizations, inventory management and prescription home delivery.

Written Communications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.

Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Social/Environmental Requirements:

1. Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work.

2. Work routine is fairly consistent, but employee needs to be able to use judgment to respond to events several times a week.

3. Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions

  • Daily: Exposure to dust, gas, fumes, steam, chemicals, Protective equipment required (Respirator, earplugs, mask, gloves, eyewear etc.).

4. Health Care Status: HCW 3: Regular provision of service in a patient care area. Examples: Unit coordinators, lead coordinator/supervisor, patient liaison, nutrition services, environmental services, registrars, information desks, security, etc- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department


Sensory Requirements:

Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Color vision/perception, Visual monotony, Visual clarity feet, Conversation, Monitoring Equipment, Telephone, Background Noise.

Physical Requirements:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.

This job requires constant walking, Endurance-working up to 4-6 hours without a break, frequent sitting, standing, twisting neck, twisting waist, Keyboard use, Reaching-above shoulder height, Reaching-below shoulder height, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 10 lbs, pushing items weighing up to 10 lbs. There may be occasional bending neck, bending waist, Fine Manipulation using both hands, Pushing/Pulling using both hands.
