JOB TITLE:  Lifeguard

REPORTS TO:   Head Lifeguard, Facilities Supervisor

STATUS:  Part-Time; Seasonal

PAY RATE:  $15.00 Hourly


General Description & Summary:


Join our enthusiastic and service-focused team at Outdoor Sylvania Community Parks as a Lifeguard. Under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager, this seasonal position supports Outdoor Sylvania by being responsive to patron safety and complaint issues. Maintains a safe, clean, and attractive swim & beach facility. Assists Head Lifeguard in attending to patron safety and complaints, and running a safe, clean, and attractive swim and beach facility.


Work Hours: 


A flexible work schedule including evenings, weekends, & holidays, 28-35 hours per week.


Physical Aspects: 


Must be a strong swimmer. Must be able to run in sand in emergency situations. Physical strength to pull up and swim with individuals up to 300 pounds. Sit in a guard chair in the sun for long periods of time. Mental and physical endurance to perform trained life-saving skills, duties, and responsibilities.


Essential Functions:


  1. Ensure safety of fellow lifeguards and Lake Olander swim & beach Facility patrons.
  2. Assist with supervision of safety inspections, care, and cleaning of swim & beach facility.
  3. Handle complaints and disruptions from swim & beach patrons. If complaints escalate, contact the Head Lifeguard, Facilities Manager, other Supervisors, or Director, in that order. If these individuals are unavailable, contact 911, which will connect us with the City of Sylvania Police Department. 
  4. Know in-depth swim & beach facility regulations, policies, procedures, and rules.
  5. Perform and complete training and testing procedures to improve physical performance.
  6. Maintain safety equipment and notify appropriate personnel of damage to or necessary replacement of safety equipment.
  7. Report unsafe conditions to necessary personnel.
  8. Maintain professional appearance.
  9. Communicates in a timely and professional manner using Slack, e-mail, texts, and phone calls.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be 15 years old or older. Must obtain and keep current a lifeguard certification from an accredited institution (Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis, etc.). Must obtain and keep a current ARC Waterfront Skills Certificate or approved equivalent. Positive upbeat personality and solid public relations skills.
