Responsibilities

Overall, the Pharmacy Tech 1 - 5 assists the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care to the patient. Gathers, labels and distributes medications accurately and efficiently. Packages, prepares, and safely compounds medications including hazardous substances accurately and efficiently. Handles, manages and distributes controlled substances in compliance with regulatory requirements and department policies; and assists with drug diversion surveillance. Assists with maintaining accurate medication inventories and billing of medications. Effectively communicates utilizing established systems and processes. Assists with training new staff.

The Research Pharmacy Tech 1 - 5 performs technician and clerical support activities associated with the coordination of the Research Support Service of Hospital Pharmacy Services.  Duties involve dose preparation (oral and IV), maintaining active and closed protocol files, completing protocol-based report forms, providing assistance to auditors and study coordinators, maintaining inventory levels, ordering and receiving new drug supplies, packaging and mailing used and unused study supplies, assuring correct drug accountability records, processing computerized study drug charges and work load statistics, and performing quality management functions.  Emphasis is placed on accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of work performed in order to maintain the integrity of the service and system.



Qualifications

Note: These qualifications apply to the Pharmacy Tech level 1, which is the minimum qualification that must be met for all levels.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Personal computer skills including word processing, database, spreadsheet development experience or ability to learn required. 
  • Two years pharmacy experience preferred.  
  • Compounded sterile preparation (CSP) training preferred.   
  • Narcotic control, inventory management, or investigational/chemotherapy protocol record keeping experience preferred.  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.  Attention to detail, accuracy, timeliness and organizational skills. 
  • Employees are required to remain in this position for a minimum of one year before requesting a transfer to another position within the institution.

License or Certification:

  • Current registration or eligibility for registration with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy.
  • National Pharmacy Technician certification within 12 months of hire.

This pay range spans from the minimum for a Tech I to the maximum for a Tech 5. Placement within a level and within the range is dependent on experience and qualifications. $20.07 - $38.85 / hour
