Position Description:

- This UAW-represented position is called the Utility classification and is a combination classification consisting of Assembler-Mechanical, Shot Blast, and Tank Painter duties which consist of the following:
- Prepare small parts for assembly; join together, fit, and attach parts to form light assemblies.
- Apply and remove masking tape, bolts or screws, and plastic / rubber plugs on parts, structures, and covers; clean for paint.
- Touch up paint with a small brush around nipples, connections, and edges of masked areas after removal of masking tape.
- Operate equipment and machinery which may be hand-operated, automatic, or semi-automatic, such as tanks, pumps, stills, spray jets, stream jets, air jets, control valves, sheet metal cabinets and hoods and aprons, conveyors and hoists, mechanical washing & degreasing equipment, and baskets for handling stock while maintaining volume of solutions, drain/replenish tanks of solutions, and operating distilling and reclaiming apparatuses.
- Use various cleaning agents which may be water soluble compounds, chlorine compounds, compounds including rust inhibitors and neutralizers.
- Apply sealants, solvents, chemical washes, paints and coatings, protective coatings, rust proofing, cosmoline, greases/lubricants, adhesives and armor panels such as spalls.
- Operate air nozzles and vacuum machines as well as grinders, sanders, other power tools, and hand tools including but not limited to hand wrenches, air/gas couplings, screwdrivers, and ratchet wrenches.
- Manually paint parts and/or vehicle structures utilizing industrial paint spraying equipment or brushes/rollers.
- Hang and remove parts from a moving parts line and apply paint utilizing spay guns while parts are in transit.
- Wear full body protective gear while manipulating and utilizing steel shot blasting hoses which operate at high pressure.
- Operate equipment including radio-controlled overhead cranes and walker/stackers to move material/structures.
- Remove dirt, scale, rust, roughness, and sharp edges from metal objects by the abrading action of ocompressed air laden with sand or other abrasive material. This is accomplished working in an enclosed room, with the operator wearing heavy gloves, helmet, respirator, and other protective clothing.
- Manipulate the nozzle connecting the air hose and sand hose over the work until the surfaces are clean and of the required degree of smoothness.
- Move work in and out of blast room, replenish sand, open and close valves, etc.
- Perform vapor blasts operations in which abrasives are carried in a liquid spray to produce the desired finish.
- Must be able to handle/ manage hazardous waste from time to time.
- Working with objects and equipment overhead.
- Clean up immediate work area.
- Conduct pre- and post-operation safety checks of equipment.
- Perform administrative tasks relevant to the classification including verifying written instructions have been followed.

Position Requirements:

- Must be a U.S. Person as defined by ITAR (International Trafficking and Arms Regulations).
- Must successfully complete vetting process administered by Department of Army Police for unescorted facility access.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and have high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Must successfully complete pre-employment process including but may not be limited to background check, medical exam, and drug screen.
- Must be able to obtain/maintain respirator clearance - wear air-fed.
- Knowledge of different types of paints strongly preferred.
- May be required to obtain/sustain Anthropometric Size Requirements (ASR) certification for vehicle entry.
- Working with objects and equipment overhead.
- Must be able to work overtime and off-shifts.

Working Conditions and Environment
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and handling various parts up to 60 lbs.
- Climbing ladders and stairs both into and onto vehicle structures/platforms and work from heights either on platforms or in vehicles from elevated surfaces.
- Must be able to stand, squat, kneel, stoop, bend, crawl and maneuver in tight spaces.
- Potential for walking and standing on uneven surfaces.
- Working in and around dust, fumes, oils, mists, lubricants, solvents and in areas with a high noise volume.
- Depending upon departmental assignment wearing a respirator may be required.
- Using hand tools including, but not limited to sledge hammer, pry bar, wrenches, air/gas couplings.
- Operating radio-controlled crane for lifting and moving material.
- Overtime and off-shift work may be required.
- Wearing of required PPE (personal protective equipment) is mandatory.
