Job Summary

We have an immediate opening for a Director of Construction Engineering Services at our Stamford, CT location. This role will primarily involve assisting the Executive Vice President in overseeing departmental operations. The Director will be responsible for ensuring timely and budget-conscious completion of projects, while adhering to contractual obligations, applicable codes, and the company's internal work product standards. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 7 years of experience in Civil/ Structural/ Construction. Architectural Engineering or a related field.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ensures adherence to project, project plans, and timelines to be met by internal and external resources.
  • Assists the Executive Vice Presidents with communicating and enforcing values, policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to the organization’s success by welcoming related, different and new requests.
  • Final review of all reports, letters, bids, specifications, construction drawings, exhibits, etc. written by staff. Assists the Executive Vice President with monthly invoicing.
  • Delegates project work to Engineers, Architects, Project Managers & Project Associates. Coordinates with in-house professionals to compete all aspects of designs. Represents clients in obtaining bids and awarding construction contracts.
  • Communicates status and issues, resolves discrepancies and problems.
  • Uses construction inspection report data to prepare payment estimates as a recommendation for payment to contractors.
  • Prioritizes and manages multiple projects within design specifications and budget restrictions.
  • Provides leadership direction through the sharing of techniques and problem-solving approaches
  • Coordinates and manages internal kick-off, milestone and closeout meetings for projects. Coordinates Draftsmen for projects. Reviews the work of the department.
  • Verifies schedules, ensures adherence to project plans and timelines to be met by internal and external resources. Collects post-project feedback to look for issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Proactively monitors success measures, work complete, schedule complete and budget complete.
  • Measures and monitors project performance. Creates and reviews project status reports.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to Project Associates. Communicates status and issues; resolves discrepancies and problems.
  • Works closely with teams to understand the scope of work, budget, goals, deliverables, and timeline to ensure project success.
  • Conducts on-site inspections and documents existing conditions and performs field testing, photographing, the creation of hand sketches and to observe work in progress.
  • Records field measurements and performs calculations. Organizes field data to facilitate analysis and problem solving. Maintains organized records, files, drawings, or other data essential to the project and ensure they are complete and stored appropriately.
  • Reviews construction plans. Preparation of written correspondence with clients, attorneys, contractors, etc.
  • Prepares investigation reports and bid documents, including drawings and technical specifications.
  • Preparation of Construction Cost Estimates. Knowledge of local and state building codes, and ability to apply to work.
  • Improves job knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing professional network, and participating in professional societies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees designated staff within the department.

This position will be remote initially and will require travel to and from the various field and contractor sites. 

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Engineering or Architecture or Construction Management or related field.

Work Experience

  • Seven years’ experience required in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management or related field.

Licenses and Certifications

  • OSHA-10 Certification preferred, else must complete within three months from hire date.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or Registered Architect/recognized industry certifications.
  • Valid United States Driver’s License required, as this position requires travel to and from client sites.

  • Excellent management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects at one time. Ability to interact in a professional manner with clients and colleagues.
  • Ability to attend client meetings and events, as needed.
  • Ability to work overtime, as needed Proficiency in AutoCAD preferred.
  • Ability to work individually or with team members and work collaboratively with other disciplines.
  • Ability to work in the field and to travel outside local areas as workload and projects required.
  • Ability to read construction drawings. Provide exceptional customer service. Ability to manage time and within project budgets.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Ability to safely work at heights. Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts and other access equipment.
