About the Department

Our outpatient facility, pulmonary function laboratory, and consultation service provide state-of-the-art evaluation and care of patients with lung disease.

Patients with new and chronic lung diseases are evaluated in our ambulatory clinic, and characterization of their lung function is performed in a state-of-the-art pulmonary function laboratory.

Job Summary

The Interventional Pulmonology (IP) Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) works in collaboration with the IP group of consulting providers that specialize in the management of complex airway and pleural diseases, lung nodules, lung masses, and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. The APN offers advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to aid in the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the lung. In general, the APN exercises autonomy in medical decision-making and provides a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services to adult patients with the disorders listed above; this may include managing patients with complex, acute, critical and chronic pulmonary conditions. In addition, the APN collects and assists in the interpretation of reports from diagnostic and laboratory tests, radiographic procedures and clinical studies. The position typically analyzes, compares and evaluates various courses of action and has the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.

Outpatient clinical work includes New patient and return clinic visit consultations for lung nodules, lung masses, LAN, BLVR evaluation, pleural effusion.

Responsibilities

  • New patient and return clinic visit consultations.
  • Presentation in tumor board and multi-disciplinary collaboration with the thoracic oncology team.
  • Outpatient thoracentesis clinic - evaluates and preforms procedure.
  • Lung cancer screening/ Pulmonary nodule program.
  • Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction program.
  • Research/ Database collection.
  • Patient education.
  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient\'s plan of care.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • Background in general pulmonary, ICU, interventional pulmonary or thoracic surgery.
  • Performing and/or assisting in pulmonary procedures.
  • Understand billing and coding from APN standpoint in regulation with the state.
  • 5 years general Pulmonary, ICU, Interventional Pulmonary or Thoracic surgery experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers.
